Hello, friends! This is the first time I post here, because I have never actually needed that big of a platform to discuss my club, Levski Sofia. I am from Bulgaria, EU bordering country, between Romania on the north, Serbia on the west and Greece and Turkey on the South. We have the Black sea as our seaside.
My favourite team, is by statistic measurements the most popular team in the country - Levski Sofia. The sports club was founded in 1911 and the football club was formally founded in 1914 in honor of the most significant freedom fighter during the dark times of Ottoman rule - Vassil Levski. The club has been through the two world wars and was considered a dissidents' club during the even darker times of communist rule. The main communist team, the authentic cska was the "eternal rival" until its' bankruptcy under free market and management in 2016.
Since about 10 years ago, FC Levski had been involved into shady practices of corporate takeover for the purpose of controlling its' crowd for political reasons. The main "hooligans" faction Sofia West (SW99, yes, the ones from the racist scandal. It was staged) were used to control, manipulate, intimidate and keep the crowd mass silent on the topic of the takeover in the club and the many political atrocities by the ruling party. Since 2010, Levski's crowd had been decreasing in numbers and constantly dividing, because of the "bent over" position of the "hooligans".
All in all, the whole football championship (efbet Liga) is in a very rough shape, with some proxy teams (Vitosha, Dunav) with very few fans, controlled by the wealthy and political power-favorite Ludogorets and cska-sofia (the ex Litex, this is a long, horrible story of corruption and renaming. Not the real cska). All those things keep the attendance levels of matches very poor and only Levski has been a constant in the 3+ thousand stadium goers per match. On TV, Levski busts all records, being the number 1 followed team by ratings. TV rights, however, are controlled by the Ludogorets owner, the ruling party's darling...
Now, we come to last year. Levski was having financial difficulties, because the puppet owner wasn't paying any debts, any ongoing financial obligations and in general, the club was about to collapse. At that point, the wealthiest Bulgarian expressed interest to take over as a main sponsor at Levski, with no political order or any conjunctural pressure. He just wanted it. His holding started sponsoring Levski with a company, organizing scratch-lottery.
Officially, they started at Levski on the 6th of March, 2019. Unofficially, the sponsor had started to appoint oditors and high management in the club about a month and a half earlier. They started by immediately paying 3 million of debt, accumulated by the irresponsible management in the past 5 years. This saved and stabilized the club. Next thing we saw was a normal finish of the season and powerful prospects for 2019/2020. The team was strenghtened and was 3 points away from the top during the winter break in 19/20.
What followed was a politically charged hit on the owner of the club, where the country nationalized the practices of all scratch-lottery. Not long after, the factual owner of the club got indicted on 11 counts of various crimes and fled the country. He was operating the club through his associate, who was the named owner of the shares. Currently the factual owner and the named owner are in exile with no actual perspective of them working with the shares, thus putting the club in a very delicate situation. No finance, no way for the club to change ownership, no long-term perspective.
The executive director that was appointed by them is a football professional, analyst, a former member of the Bulgarian Football Union and several UEFA initiatives. His name actually matters - Pavel Kolev. He is the only person, currently operating on the helm of the club, acting as a Chairman. Once the situation unveiled itself as it is, he and all of the coaches refused to take any salary, Kolev opened up to the public about Levski's situation and started immediately brainstorming about the possibilities of fan involvement. At that moment, 10th of February 2020, he announced that Levski has 200 000 leva (about 100 000 euro) in the bank account, 143,000 leva of which was required to be paid immediately and every next month to the National Income Agency as a part of a rescheduling agreement for several million of past debts. Kolev announced that the monthly expense of the current (mid season) state of the club is 750 000 Euro. What happened was that the club and all groups of organized fans started several campaigns, that have currently brought the club about over 500 000 euro for less than a month. The campaigns are as follows: - BUY A SUBSCRIPTION FOR THE STANDS - Currently, over 5000 Levski subscriptions have been sold, 1/3 of which to people who are abroad and wouldn't even come to matches, but are required to announce this to the club, so the club could double book their seats for profit. The prices are 183, 75, 67, 60, 50, 33 and 23 euro, depending on the sector, starting from the best possible seats and ending with the ultras tribune. - MAKE A BANK TRANSFER - Because of the ownership status, Levski was initially turned down for a charity bank account, but eventually Pavel Kolev managed to make it work, as an acting Chairman. - VISIT AS MANY MATCHES AS POSSIBLE AND POST MONEY INTO THE URN - The three home matches in the spring so far have been visited approximately by 40-50 000 people. This is when the ticket sales really matter for the club. The urn is self-explainatory, there are volunteers roaming around the stands with urns to which you can post cash, which is later counted by club officials. Overall, by this way of donation, the club has amassed somewhere around 27-30 000 euro.
- SEND SMS, SUBSCRIBE FOR SMS DONATION - Since the start of this donation campaign on 25.02.2020, fans have donated 31 795 euro (63 590 leva) with SMS or bank transfers. - BUY VIRTUAL TICKETS FOR MATCHES BEHIND CLOSED DOORS DUE TO COVID-19 - Levski released collector's "virtual" tickets about the upcoming match against the 8-time straight and current champion Ludogorets. The match will be on the 14th of March. The club sold 5000 of those tickets in one day so far. Main reason is, of course, income for the club. The concept is simple - you buy yourself a ticket as usual, but you can't really visit the match, hence the ticket has a "BEHIND CLOSED DOORS" stamp. Actually, a globally unique way of supporting your club in tough times. Here you can see the tickets, every single one of them has a price of 5 euro (10 leva). - PAYPAL, OTHER METHODS AND DONATION CAMPAIGN REVIEW - The website levski.com gives full information about the progress on the donations, as well as 3rd party methods like PayPal, TransferWise and some local ones.
Basically, the main goal before Pavel Kolev and everyone currently is to find a sponsor for the club. What is rumored currently is the possibility of the political assignment of the Bulgarian Sport Totalizer (national lottery company) as a sponsor to Levski, which would be a direct financial assistance by the country, organized by the party in power, which is scared of losing the donating and casual Levski fans for the next elections. Obviously, finding a liquid and interested sponsor here would be like hitting a jackpot in a rigged edition of the Bulgarian Sport Totalizer lottery and I don't count much on that. What I count on is the fact that over here we have thousands of people, who just love the game. The game as you can only see it on your stadium, with your favourite shirts on, seeing a goal in front of the favourite stand, moshing through the crowd in joy, hugging random brothers and sisters. People, supporting Rangers, Parma, Portsmouth, Leeds, Scarborough, Fiorentina and multiple other teams, having felt the same soul-eating pain of the favourite team possibly going away for good. Or at least going to the bottom leagues for several seasons. This is what I am asking you to help me and the other Levski fans avoid. The actual situation isn't that grim in the current rates of donations, but we are speaking for Bulgaria, which has an average salary of what, 350-400 euro? It will surely exhaust the regular people, giving so much of their so little to support the favourite club. Once again - I am asking you to donate to save my favourite club.
