I got into watch "collecting" a few years ago, and like many people I bought a load of reasonably cheap watches as i enjoyed the pleasure of wearing them and matching them with what i was wearing on that day.
Part of the pleasure was in "vintage" watches that I'd never seen anyone else wearing before, and knowing that if it wasn't for me - and people like me - these watches would never see the light of day and be gathering dust or rust in a drawer or box somewhere.
Eventually, I decided to curtail my multiple purchases and restrict myself to 2-3 watches a year.
While i have a number of other watches, these are the ones that i wear with the most pride and pleasure and will never leave my collection. From left to right:
Omega Speedmaster Professional: A watch that is familiar to everyone here. This was given to me by my wife as a wedding present a few years ago, and so will always have a special place in my heart.
Omega Chronostop "De Marchi": Bought from kabaclyde about a year ago (fantastic seller BTW). What i love about this watch is the wrist presence that it has. It's also really easy to match with a sporty look (shorts and a t-shirt) as well as a little more dressed up. What's unique is that it's quite a large watch for its era so has aged very well!
Rolex Air-King Precision: I bought this watch from a long-time family friend that i have known for as long as i can remember. He received it from his parents for his 21st birthday in 1969, but it's actually a 1965 model. The watch had taken a battering over the years and eventually stopped working. He was offered a sum by a watch dealer and i matched that price and it was mine. When i received the watch it was not working at all, the crown (not original) would not screw in, the automatic winder did not work, the bracelet was stretched and the whole watch was badly scratched and banged up.
I sent it to Rolex on the UK, but the sum to "repair" the watch (replace the dial, hands, movement, crown, bracelet and body of the watch) was about three and a half thousand pounds and it wouldn't even be the same watch! So instead i sent it to Michael Young of Classic Watch Repair with the instructions to make it work, but keep it as original as possible. Given the state of the watch, i also asked for it to be polished. Now some of you may disagree with this, but given that i plan to wear this watch for a very long time, and hand it down to my son, i was not too bothered about the impact on the resale value. At my request, he replaced the crown for an original Rolex crown, and also replaced the crystal. Everything else is original which is exactly what i asked for.
It wears small as many vintage watches do. But this is such a beautiful looking watch that is simple, elegant and classic.
Rolex Oysterquartz: Quite a rarity, and many people who notice it's a Rolex tend to not know that Rolex made Quartz watches. It's so bling and so retro that it really catches the eye whenever i wear it.
Ever since i first spotted it i knew i had to have one. I waited until i found one with the right colour scheme, in good condition and at the right price. I eventually bought one online from a jeweller in Germany and couldn't be happier with my purchase.
Best part is, if you take it to a Rolex service centre they will replace the battery for you free of charge!
