Quick Edit: ALL of the shows mentioned here are on Funimation only (at least in the US). And of course there is more original anime this season but these are the three that have the most potential in my eyes.

So often I see anime originals get almost ignored and put in the shadow of the high profile manga and light novel adaptations. However there is so much fun to be had in watching an original piece of work. Everyone is in the same boat in that no one knows what to expect or where it is going to take take us. I firmly believe everyone should always give anime originals a shot when they are airing even when we are in a season as stacked as the winter 2021 we are currently in.

Already, we have 3 anime originals that have really caught my attention and seem like they have a lot of potential: Back Arrow, Sk8 The Infinity, and Wonder Egg Priority. I know it is way to early to make any judgements, but hell based on first impression I like what I see.

Back Arrow

I know what you are thinking, "Why should I care?". Let me tell you why. The director of this anime is the legendary Gorou Taniguchi, you know, the creator of CODE GEASS. Then you also have the script and series composition being done by Kazuki Nakashima. Nakashima is known for all sorts of amazing anime including several classics; he was the original creator for Kill La Kill, BNA, AND he even did the script and series composition for Gurren Lagann and was the original creator for both the Gurren Lagann movies. Back Arrow is the one I really want to blow up this season. One of the biggest reasons I want it to succeed is because we haven't had a really good mecha anime in a hot minute. I mean we are really overdue for another big mecha anime like what we had with a Gundam, Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, or a Darling in the Franxxx (at least a version that doesn't shit the bed in the second half).
I already love its setting with all of the known world being contained within a set up walls. Humanity being confined within walls is always a surefire way to get me interested and makes it easier to get invested into the story and world. Why is everyone contained to a single area? What is the nature of the walls? Is there really nothing beyond them? I feel there is always so much potential to be had with it that kind of a setting. The mechs have a lot of really cool designs I love the way in which they summon the mechs, putting on a armband to summon and inhabit a mech, its just so cool. The fact that you just straight die or rather vanish if you are defeated while inhabiting a mech adds a layer of mystery. Why do the mechs AND the person just disappear, and presumably die as we have been told? Do they actually die? Who knows?

SK8 the Infinity

This anime just OOZES cool and hot from every frame of its animation. This anime is just pure sakuga, the animation is just so hot, which is not surprise considering it is from studio BONES. This is also the first anime we've ever had that is ABOUT skateboarding. It has such a cool premise with the whole underground skateboard racing and you have all sorts of zany characters all of which are alter egos of their tamer "public" personalities. The ED animation perfectly captures what it is like to be skater (which I used to be back in my middle school days like 11 years ago), you just try out a bunch a cool moves and often time fail hilariously until you eventually get it. The character designs are all amazing, the music is some of the best music I have heard in anime in a minute, the music genres from old school hip hop to 90's/2000's rock with music vibes ranging from that found in Megalobox to something you would find in an Tony Hawk Pro Skater game...needless to say the music is just COOL.
Who is behind, why should I care? I will tell you why. First off the director is Kiroko Utsumi, who is know for being involved in all sorts of projects: Director of Banana Fish, did some key animation, episode direction, and storyboarding for epsidoes of Clannad (and After Story), Hyouka, Nichijou, K-On!!, and Haruhi Suzumiya. Then we have our series compostion being done by Ichirou Ookouchi who worked on Devilman: Crybaby, and Code Geass. Also its just so fucking cool.

Wonder Egg Priority

Talk about subversion of expectation from the PV and trailers we got. I was expecting some sort of romance anime or something. NOPE. We are getting a psychological thriller horror that is tackling many problems in school and society like depression, suicide, bullying, and regrets of not helping others you see going through those problems. The concept is really weird, a bit confusing, and REALLY interesting. I mean I do not even know how to begin describing it, the beginning sequence was already weird enough. A girl sees a dead bug on the road which leads her to a bathroom, then toilet paper started talking to her, then she got a weird marked egg that she threw at a wall and then it grew and a person came out and then knife wielding murderous versions of Shock, Lock and Barrel from a Nightmare Before Christmas start chasing them. I know it sounds weird...and well it is, but it worked so well for this pilot episode. Then you find out part of her backstory and I can already tell that this anime will probably destroy by the end. The animation is gorgeous (I mean look at this egg sakuga), the art is gorgeous, and even the character designs are clean!!!!! It is being made by studio CloverWorks so right away that grabs my attention, the same studio that made The Promised Neverland, and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai.

Why should you care, who is behind it? This is an anime that has a few firsts for its staff. First off we have Shinji Nojima who is a famous Japanese TV Drama producescreenwriter as the creatoscriptwriter and this will be his first time writing something for an anime. Now we have the director, Shin Wakabayashi who played some parts in many anime like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Highschool of the Dead, Attack on Titan, and Toradora!. Then we have the planning producer Nabuhiro Nakayama, who has been the producer for anime like: Danmachi, The Misfit at Demon King Academy, Alderamin on the Sky, A Certain Scientific Railgun.

Its been a hot minute since I have been this interested in this many anime originals. Do yourselves a favor and check them out.

I feel like I've seen this term thrown out a lot on this subreddit, and on Reddit in general, and I'm curious as to what it actually means.
I haven't seen every single shonen anime out there, so feel free to let me know of any that you like. And yes, I KNOW shonen is a demographic, not a genre, but you guys know EXACTLY what I'm talking about when I say "shonen protagonist"; I'm more or less referring to battle shonen, which is the most popular type of shonen. Anyway, from what I've seen, these seem to be the most common threads that shonen protags share:

1. Idealistic, stubborn, feels very strongly about their beliefs.
2. Wants to achieve some lofty goal, such as reaching a position of power or prestige, or fulfilling a personal goal such as defeating an enemy or finding/saving a loved one.
3. Most of the time they are unwilling to kill and will do so only as an absolute last resort.
4. To the chagrin of the characters around them, they are usually ignorant of social cues, and most of their intelligence is relegated to combat.
5. Often times their powers will tie in to directly how emotional they are feeling at the moment. The more angry/determined they are, the stronger they are.
6. They are usually very powerful, in some cases ludicrously so.

That being said, I feel like there's a bit of this weird circlejerk around who is considered a "generic shonen protagonist" and who isn't, and no one really knows what they are talking about. Like I said, I haven't seen every single shonen anime out there, but ALL of the popular ones I could think of, with the exceptions of Death Note, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Gintama, One Punch Man, and Soul Eater fit that description. Note that two of these series, One Punch Man and Gintama, are parodies of the shonen genre, and Death Note is a completely different brand of shonen altogether. So that just leaves JoJo and Soul Eater as the only two who are actual straight shonen.
My point is, the criteria are too vague to determine who is stereotypical and who isn't. Deku and Tanjiro get criticised for being "generic", yet other characters like Emma from The Promised Neverland and Edward Elric aren't considered "generic". And Edward Elric totally fits all of the categories of "generic shonen protagonist", it's just that he's more fleshed out than the others. This has more to do with the actual writing of FMA, rather than Edward's character design. (Although, Emma and Edward aren't incredibly powerful, so that's something.)
Heck Eren Yeager is a "generic shonen protagonist", he's just a darker version, like what happens when a shonen protagonist completely falls into despair. And no, I'm not talking about Season 1 Eren, I'm talking about manga "No Mercy Route" Eren with the manbun. He's a shonen protagonist approached from a fresh angle, but people are acting like he's suddenly better than all the others just cause he commits war crimes. Heck, even Akko from Little Witch Academia and Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon more or less fit the criteria for shonen protagonist, and those aren't even shonen!
I know I haven't really said anything substantial here, I just wanted to start a discussion.
Edit: some of y'all misunderstood, I'm not saying protagonists like Eren or Edward Elric are generic protags, in fact I'm not calling anyone generic, I'm just wondering what the hell generic even means.

Intro: I hope this gives people an idea of what life is like on the other side of the world, in the Philippines. I’ve also included Ref29’s questions at the beginning to give you more insight into my background. Please know that writing this turned out to be much harder than I had originally anticipated since it forced me to confront several things about me, particularly about my mental health and my privilege. I’m aware that I’m incredibly privileged and have lived a very comfortable, sheltered life, when compared to most Filipinos, especially amid this global pandemic when practically half the country is starving. I’m really nervous to share this with all of you, but please be easy on me as this was not easy for me to do.
Ref29 questions:
Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?
Yes, education is held in high regard here in the Philippines, to the point that landing a well-paying job without a bachelor’s is extremely hard, if not downright possible. Parents are also expected to pay for the entirety of college, although, of course, this isn’t true for all. Coming from an upper-middle-class family, I was even more pressured to land a spot in one of the Big 4 universities, which is sort of like the equivalent of the Ivy League here. In the Philippines, college admission involves taking an entrance exam at each college that you’re applying to, so my senior year of high school was spent in after-class prep centers to prepare for this. Fortunately, I was able to major in a pre-law course in a Big 4 university, which my parents fully paid for.
Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent/guardian(s) educate you about finances?
My parents had the mindset of “work hard, play hard,” which meant that they worked seven days a week, but compensated for it with week-long family vacations abroad between twice to thrice a year. As I mentioned, this was a very privileged upbringing. They weren’t extremely thrifty, but they definitely instilled in us values like delayed gratification and spending money only if you worked hard for it. They also insisted that my brother and I save at least 20% of our allowances, so upon reaching first grade, we were taken to the bank to open a junior savings account.
Unfortunately, our business has taken a huge hit, due to policies that the current government has, so we’ve had to significantly tighten our belts. We don’t worry about putting food on the table or of being unable to afford basic necessities; however, we’ve had to do away with things like weekend shopping trips, impulse purchases, eating out every week, and international vacations for the past two or three years now.
Did you worry about money growing up?
It’s extremely privileged of me to say this, but no. I didn’t. I come from generational wealth on my mom’s side while my paternal grandfather owns several properties. I was always secure in the fact that if we were ever struggling financially, one of my grandparents would end up bailing us out.
Do you worry about money now?
Yes, I’m currently saving up to go to law school abroad. This will mean repeating my bachelor’s, but this program will open up so many opportunities for me. However, it also means having to save up at least $20,000 to make it work, and I’m still pretty far from my goal.
At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?
I’m not yet financially responsible for myself. My 22-year-old brother, E, and I are still living with our parents, and they’ve refused our offer to pitch in with the bills. They both believe that as long as they’re still working, then it’s their duty to provide for their children. However, this also means that their kids are their retirement plans, which is a very common mentality in the Philippines.
Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain.
No, I haven’t.
SECTION ONE: ASSETS AND DEBT
Retirement Balance: All my money right now is being poured to fund my future studies, so I don’t have a retirement balance yet. I don’t know if this is wise or not, and this has been a great cause for my anxiety these past few months.
Savings Account Balance: I have approximately $16,000 spread out across three different bank accounts right now.
Miscellaneous Debt: I bought AirPods from my friend last year, and she asked me to pay her back in installments, so she wouldn’t be tempted to spend all the money in one go. I have approximately $56 left on this, which I’ll be paying next month.
SECTION TWO: INCOME
Income Progression:
This is my first job ever. As I previously mentioned, school is extremely important here in the Philippines. In my case, throughout my elementary and high school years, I was in school from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and this was supplemented by after-class tutoring sessions and weekend advanced classes. College was basically the same since I decided to take up two minor degrees, in addition to my major, which meant that I took 8-10 classes every semester. So, I didn’t have time at all for a part-time job, which was okay, given the fact that my parents funded my education 100%.
2019-2020: I graduated from university in June 2019 and my parents asked me to start working in the family business. This didn’t turn out so good, though, since they refused to pay me a salary and would guilt-trip me whenever I’d take money from the day’s sales to pay for my expenses. When talks of a lockdown began in February 2020, I began looking for a job that would allow me to work remote since I had an inkling that our business would be shut down. Fortunately, my friend recommended me for an open position in the company that she was working at, and that’s where I’ve been since then.
In addition to my full-time job as a Social Media Analyst, I also started doing freelance work early last year.
Main Job Monthly Take Home: This varies. I’m considered a freelancer in my job, despite the fact that I’ve been with them since early 2020. I think they mostly do this to avoid paying me benefits, which is morally questionable but sort-of legal in the Philippines. So, I get paid a daily rate and am on a no-work-no-pay basis. If I don’t take any leaves for the month, then my take-home pay will be $582.79.
Side Gig Monthly Take Home: Again, this varies. In 2020, I believe I averaged approximately $1,200 per month. I don’t know if I’ll be able to hit these same numbers this year, though.
SECTION THREE: EXPENSES
All expenses below are monthly unless otherwise specified.
Phone Bill: This varies, depending on my data usage. Our WiFi doesn’t reach the second floor, so I’m forced to use my data if I’m working or staying in my bedroom. Our phone bills during lockdown were also suspended and have been amortized over six months since then, so I’m still paying this off. Currently, my phone bill can be anywhere from $52 to $83.
Subscriptions: Spotify Premium ($3) – but this is added to my phone bill, thanks to my service provider. I also pay for Babbel ($13) because language learning is my hobby, and I’m currently learning Brazilian Portuguese.
Pet Expenses: I average about $10 for my dog’s food and treats. A trip to the vet for a regular check-up is $8. My local government unit provides certain pet vaccines for free, so we get our shots from them.
Other: My brother, E, and I have privately agreed to answer for the expenses that our 10-year-old brother, L, incurs. So, we pay for his food, school supplies, etc. I budget $15 for him, but I’m not upset if I have to go over this amount. Right now, though, I’m paying for most of L’s expenses since E’s business isn’t doing too hot, due to the post-holiday slump.
DISCLAIMER: Face masks are mandatory, if you’re outside. People also aren’t allowed to go into establishments if they don’t have a face mask + face shield on. Both of these were worn at all times outside my home.
DAY ONE - SUNDAY, JANUARY 10
10:00 a.m. – My cousin and her husband are heading to the shopping mall to run a few errands. I go with them to have my eyes checked as my last prescription was from 2019. The doctor tells me that astigmatism in my right eye has been corrected (thank god) but that my left eye has gotten worse (noooo). I buy contact lenses and have them put in new lenses in my specs. $93
1:30 p.m. – My cousin is a few weeks pregnant and is craving mushroom soup from a particular chain restaurant, so we head over there. I get a burger and offer to pay for my share, but she and her husband refuse.
5:00 p.m. – My parents are very religious and require us to attend Sunday Mass every week as a family. Our church has the recommended COVID-19 measures in place (2-3 people to a pew, contact tracing, etc.), but I’m still annoyed that the Catholic Church here is trying to claim that mass is an essential service that should be allowed to continue, even when it clearly isn’t.
6:00 p.m. – Before heading home, we drop off take-out dinner for my Grandma. She lives alone, so we try to visit her at least once a week. We talk through the gate, though, to keep her safe.
11:00 p.m. – As a social media analyst, my shift is from 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. because I have to take note of all the online traction from the day before. This has worked rather well for me, mainly because I have insomnia.

DAY TWO - MONDAY, JANUARY 11
5:30 a.m. – On Mondays, I have to analyze all social media traction from the weekend, and this has definitely cemented my deep hatred for this day of the week. Fortunately, it wasn’t too terrible this time. I chill for a bit by catching an episode of Friend Zone, a TV series from Thailand that’s sort of like Gossip Girl, except they’re middle-class and have actual jobs.
7:00 a.m. – I wake up L for his classes and begin working on my freelance job. Breakfast is leftovers from Sunday night dinner, so I have Truffle Mac and Cheese, and Garlic Parmesan Chicken Wings. My parents and E usually leave very early in the morning for their respective businesses, so it’s usually just me and L.
10:00 a.m. – I send off my social media reports and watch an episode of Fairy Tail.
1:00 p.m. – My brain is out of creative juices, so I take a nap. Before doing so, I place an order to replenish my toner ($5) and AHA serum ($5). I’m also running low on my fish oil capsules, so I order that too ($6.87). My total comes out to $19.25, due to shipping. $19.25
3:00 p.m. – L wakes up from my nap and I work some more before heading out to walk my dog. It’s cold outside – 28ºC or 82.4ºF. This is how winters in Manila look like!
6:45 p.m. – Dinner is white rice, Steamed Tilapia, and Ginataang Sigarilyas. According to Google, this translates to “Winged Beans in Coconut Milk.” I don’t know if this translation is 100% legit but it’s probably one of my favorite vegetable dishes ever.

DAY THREE - TUESDAY, JANUARY 12
2:30 a.m. – One of my accounts is in crisis mode, so their reports are much more finicky than usual. When I feel that my brain is about to explode from reading social media posts, I work on my freelance deliverables.
7:00 a.m. – Again, I wake up L. Tuesdays are hard for him because he has back-to-back classes, and it isn’t long before I notice that he seems a bit overwhelmed. This year has been tough for him because we moved him to a new school and this, plus online learning, meant that he’s had to adjust like crazy. It’s too much for a 10-year-old, I think. I buy him his favorite Iced Cacao milk tea (I think it’s called boba in the States) to cheer him up and order an Iced Matcha for myself ($7.89). We drink our milk teas while having a very healthy breakfast of hotdogs and rice. $7.89
11:00 a.m. – The rest of the morning goes by quickly. I send off my reports, work on my deliverables, pitch to new clients, answer e-mails, and so on. Unfortunately, two of my clients have declined to work with me again since I was a bit late with a few of my deliverables, due to the holiday season. I try to take it as a sign from the universe that I need to slow down, but I’m still pretty sad about it.
5:30 p.m. – I wake up from a nap and notice that my phone bill is due, so I pay ($53.49). I Dinner tonight is Fried Milkfish, Rice cooked with Crab Fat, and Sayote sa Sotanghon, which is basically chayote mixed with vermicelli. $53.49

DAY FOUR - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13
2:00 a.m. – Thank God, my account has ended its crisis mode, so work is a bit more chill. Again, social media traction and freelance work. When I was 15, I thought I’d be spending my early twenties in a high-paying corporate job, wearing cute clothes and going to parties afterward. Instead, I’m spending it in teddy bear pajamas. I blame Gossip Girl and Korean dramas for my unrealistic expectations.
7:00 a.m. – After waking up L and sending off my reports, I spend the rest of the day working on my freelance jobs.
11:30 a.m. – Our live-in helper, J, prepares fried chicken for lunch and I eat it with L. He still has some time left before his next class, so I play a few rounds of Among Us with him. I honestly don’t enjoy the game as much as I make it seem I do, but it’s his absolute favorite and I like having these small bonding moments with my little brother.
1:45 p.m. – My brain can’t take it anymore, and I pass out from exhaustion.
3:30 p.m. – L wakes me up from my nap and I try my best to get a few more things done. Thankfully, my next deadline involves a podcast script on a certain historical event. These are pretty easy to write, although researching them can be a pain in the ass sometimes.
4:00 p.m. – I take a break from work by checking out apartment listings because it’s fun, even though I have no plans to move out. I honestly want to, mainly because my relationship with my parents isn’t that great, and living back home has highlighted that even more. E has it worse, though, and his relationship with our dad has deteriorated so much that they got into a few physical fights during lockdown. While I can afford to move out, E can’t and of course, L is underage, so I can’t take him with me. Right now, I’m bearing the brunt of my parents’ stress and frustration, and if I leave, then it’s likely that they’ll start taking it out on my brothers. So, I don’t because I’m their eldest sister and a huge part of me feels like it’s my duty to protect them. But if worse comes to worst, then I’m ready to shoulder E and his expenses. He only started his business last year, so it isn’t super profitable yet. The post-holiday slump hasn’t been kind to him either.
5:30 p.m. – Dinner is Tinolang Manok, which is a dish that consists of chicken and papaya slices cooked in ginger-flavored broth. For me, it’s a must-eat during “wintertime.” While eating, my parents ask me what my plans are for my upcoming birthday. They’re trying to pressure me to treat the entire family to dinner, but I decline because a) I’m trying to save money, and b) COVID-19.
8:45 p.m. – I take a shower and catch a few episodes of a Chinese drama called “A Love So Beautiful.” Then, it’s back to work.

DAY FIVE – THURSDAY, JANUARY 14
3:45 a.m. – I finish my main job early, so I go and work on some deliverables, but I keep getting distracted by “A Love So Beautiful” that I barely get anything done. Before I know it, it’s nearly time to wake my brother up, and I haven’t accomplished anything at all.
5:00 a.m. – My mom brought home fried chicken from McDonalds last night for L’s breakfast, but I’m so hungry that I steal it. I order the same thing ($5.50) and schedule a 6:30 a.m. delivery to hide my crime. $5.50
7:00 a.m. – I wake up L, shower, and settle in to watch the final episode in the series. I’ve accepted the fact that I won’t get anything done until I find out what happens to Chen Xiaoxi and Jiang Chen.
12:00 p.m. – I must be more torn up about losing two clients than I initially thought I was because I end up crying while working on a deliverable. I lock myself in my room and plan to have a good 10-minute crying session, but this quickly into a full-on breakdown. I never really recognized the impact that my home situation and lack of proper sleep have left on me, but it looks like the emotional toll is too much. I’m also feeling really anxious about one of my long-time clients, who I feel is a bit disappointed with my work lately, and this sends me spiraling even more. I end up crying for a good hour or so. It would have gone on longer, had it not been for L, who knocks on my door and cuddles me for a bit. He can tell that I’m upset, thanks to my swollen eyes, so he offers to treat me to milk tea using his Christmas money. It’s sweet, but I decline.
4:00 p.m. – After working and a quick nap, I put on a Korean eye mask to hide how swollen they are. My dad gets annoyed whenever we cry since he perceives it to be a sign of weakness. I know that he’s completely wrong about this, but I’m too exhausted to argue with him tonight.
5:00 p.m. – Dinner is white rice and Pork Bistek. I don’t know if that has a proper English translation, but it’s basically pork chops and onions cooked in soy sauce and calamansi juice. I’m still feeling pretty lethargic from my breakdown earlier, so I take a cold shower to feel refreshed.
10:00 p.m. – I guess breaking down uses up a lot of energy because I’m starving, even though dinner was only a few hours ago. L is also hungry, so we ask J to buy us Puto Bumbong, which is a steamed purple rice cake topped with margarine, coconut flakes, and brown sugar. This particular stall also puts cheese and condensed milk on theirs. I personally find it too sweet, but L is in love, as only 10-year-old boys who can eat a whole jar of Nutella can be. J uses the leftover money from today’s dinner to pay.
11:30 p.m. – Work is pretty chill today, so I watch an anime called “The Promised Neverland” in-between monitoring social media traction.

DAY SIX – FRIDAY, JANUARY 15
12:00 a.m. – Happy 23rd birthday to me! I initially wanted to go to treat myself to a spa to celebrate my birthday, but I canceled my booking because of COVID-19. Hopefully, the Philippine government will finally get its shit together by March, which is when I had my appointment rebooked. I’m doubtful, but hopeful.
7:00 a.m. – I log off for the week and settle in to finally enjoy some no-work bliss. Kidding! I wake up L, take a shower, and work on my freelancing deliverables. Since it’s my birthday, J allows me to decide what breakfast will be and I pick chicken nuggets because I know that it’s something that L will enjoy too.
11:00 a.m. – My lack of sleep this week has caught up to me, and I pass out from exhaustion. Thankfully, I don’t have any deadlines today.
4:30 p.m. – L wakes me up, and we dress for Mass. My parents require us to attend Mass together as a family whenever it’s someone’s birthday. L isn’t allowed inside the church because of my area’s COVID-19 restrictions, so he and E sit outside. I’m jealous because the air is so stuffy inside the church that breathing through a mask and a face shield is a struggle.
6:00 p.m. – We come home and a few of my other family members are there for a...surprise birthday dinner. I’m trying not to feel annoyed at the fact that my parents went against my wishes because I know they mean well, but still. I had planned a quiet night with anime and a face mask to celebrate my birthday, but of course, this won’t be feasible any longer. I’m trying not to let my irritation show because everyone made an effort to be here, but still. Oh well, at least they kept the number of guests below 10, in line with restrictions.
6:30 p.m. – My mom ordered food from a caterer, and we settle in for a dinner of Baked Salmon in Cheese with Green Beans, Braised Chicken with Rosemary and Potatoes, and Ox Tongue with Mushrooms. 11:00 p.m. – I nurse a glass of white wine, and it isn’t long before my aunt and I have managed to polish off the entire bottle. I can’t help but feel a bit sad because only two of my friends greeted me today. I know that I shouldn’t put a lot of stock into birthday greetings because they’re just words, and I know that all my friends are busy with work, and I also know that they’re going through their own mental battles right now because of COVID-19, but still. It sucks.
11:30 p.m. – A friend from Germany asks me if he calculated the timezone correctly, and he wishes me a happy birthday. As a gift, he sends me a video of snow falling out his window. I don’t know if I’m crying because I’m wine-drunk, or if I’m crying out of envy because SNOW or because I’m a teeny bit sad. Maybe it’s all of the above, idk.

DAY SEVEN - SATURDAY, JANUARY 16
2:00 a.m. – Party’s over and all my relatives have gone home. I set an alarm for 4 a.m. because I have an early-morning deadline to meet.
9:00 a.m. – I must be drunker and more tired than I thought because I completely slept through my alarm. I apologize to my client and ask for an extension. I’m hoping that he’s kind to me because it was my birthday the day before; fortunately, he grants the extension.
12:30 p.m. – E is craving Chinese food, so I hop onto Grab (Southeast Asian version of Uber) and place an order from Panda Express. They were only brought to the Philippines in 2019, and lines have been pretty long, so it was only this year that I was able to taste their non-Chinese Chinese food. I pay for our food as a late birthday treat for my brothers and also because I know that E has been denying himself a lot of things lately to have more cash to inject into his business. With delivery, the total comes out to $13. He offers to wash the dishes afterward, which I’m really thankful for. $13
3:00 p.m. – The rest of the day passes by quickly. It’s J’s day off today, so L and I do household chores. While doing them, I catch up with some of my favorite podcasts, including Military Murder and The Asian Madness Podcast. Highly recommend the two of them. 4:00 p.m. – I’m trying to work out whether I should buy the new Macbook Air M1 or not. I’ve been using my 2014 Macbook Air 11 since high school, but while this has been great for school, it’s a huge challenge now that I’m spending more than eight hours a day on it. The screen is too small, so my back and shoulders hurt the entire time I’m on it, and the resolution is also too low. A few people from this sub have recommended that I get an external monitor, but I don’t have a home office or a desk. I work on our dining room table because my vanity’s too small. Since we don’t have Apple Store here in the Philippines, I have to make do with a re-seller. Right now, the lowest that a Macbook Air M1 goes for is $1,102. This is something that I can definitely afford, especially since a junk shop has offered to give me $249 in exchange for my old one. But I’m having trouble being okay with buying a new laptop when my current one is working just fine. I know I deserve it after all my hard work and I know that it’ll make working much easier, but still.
6:00 p.m. – For dinner, my parents bring home take-out from a local restaurant. We eat Breaded Tofu, Butter Buffalo Chicken Wings, and Mixed Vegetables. I do the dishes afterward, which takes a long time, because dishwashers aren’t common in the Philippines, and it’s hard to manually scrub oily food.
8:00 p.m. – I work and watch anime in-between.

REFLECTION
This week’s spending was unusually high, mainly because of my phone bill and rare expenses, like eyeglasses and contact lenses. I also had way too much food delivered this week, but I felt like treating my brothers since it was my birthday, so I don’t mind that all. My usual weekly spending, however, is somewhere around $10.
But aside from spending, I think that writing this money diary really forced me to confront my privilege and mental health issues, as well as my workaholic tendencies. It’s tough to admit to yourself that you aren’t happy at all, but maybe it’s time to finally face it. I feel like I also have a problem with making big splurges that will ultimately benefit me, so moving forward, I’d like to remember that while treating my brothers is totally okay, I should be kinder to myself too. There’s still a lot of issues that I need to unpack and work through, but hopefully, being 23 will give me the strength to do so.

Ok. To start, this is my first reddit post. I'm actually deciding to contribute for my first time because of how many emotions I'm feeling rn.
Second, I started reading the manga following being an anime-only. After season 2, episode 5, I realized something was off, namely Norman appearing way too early, and decided to check out the source material. I blew through it in like 2 days, it's the first manga I've ever finished and holy shit was it a ride
Ok onto my discussion... FULL SPOILER WARNING FOR THE ENTIRE MANGA AND ANIME UP TO SEASON 2 EPISODE 5
First, I wanna compare my anime experience to my manga reading experience. The first season is probably in my top 5 experiences in anime, it gave me the same feelings i felt as a teenager reading things like Percy Jackson and the hunger games; the feeling of being a child against the world. I'd never had an anime encompass that feeling so entirely before. Sure, I've watched plenty of anime with child/younger protagonists, but never one that gave me such an investment in a child vs adult dynamic. As an adult now, I can say that nothing has made me feel like a child again more than this show. I eagerly anticipated what was to come.
Season 2 started off alright. I had no perspective of the broader world when starting it, so the exposition dump that sonju and mujika give is a lot, but it's satisfying after having no clue outside of the demons eat kids element. Also clears up the timeline that the kids gather from the minerva books. I'd also like the say that I really enjoyed these demon characters, I really enjoyed watching the children interact with adult characters I WISH THERE WERE MORE but more on that later.
Once they reach the bunker though, the plot started to feel...idk empty? They were making progress, but they didn't have any direction to go in outside of what this pen was telling them. Which is fine and all, but I wasn't overly invested. Then the bunker invasion happens, in which the children incur literally no casualties, and manage to escape due to a monster I think? Regardless, then we get a TIMESKIP with absolutely no warning and no reason. We were moving at a snails pace before, but the second things get interesting lets skip it all got it got it
So now we're in a demon town, where I guess they're getting supplies? Idk and the bit with the temple is odd but I assume we'll get more context on that later. Skipping over how the kids are now literal ninjas running over the rooftops to escape the demons, we get the reintroduction of Norman, which made me feel absolutely nothing. Not because I didn't like his character, no he was a very entertaining part of season 1. And not because I already knew he was reappearing because I saw a later manga volume cover with him on it. Just because it felts absolutely way too early. This is exactly the moment I realized something was wrong, did some minor research and saw the outrage of manga readers, and decided to pick up the manga.
In a comparison to season 1 and the first arc of the books, I was surprised how completely they match up. Outside of the internal monologue, and I guess the inclusion of krones doll? things were basically 1:1. (And I know that the inclusion of Krones doll in the anime was to substitute for the lack of internal monologue in the show, not exactly sure how I feel about it's inclusion but whatever.) Reexperiencing this arc still made me cry with norman's departure, and I felt completely satisfied. Onto post escape
So the beginning of season 2 seemed pretty accurate to me. Outside the exclusion of the vampire trees (which i quite liked), and Mujika not mentioning the seven walls to Emma, them reaching the bunker seemed pretty similar to the anime portrayal. So imagine my surprise, when reading the manga and they enter the monitor room of the bunker, AND THERES A MAN THERE. I literally dropped my ipad, this was so unexpected and such a welcome surprise. And he's INTERESTING. Now them exploring the bunker is interesting because theres a man there that doesn't want them there. This adds something. Not to mention, instead of HELP being written on the walls, now its POACHERS, which brings to mind the kind of fate the previous kids in this bunker had. Mister and his character arc was one of my favorite parts of the manga, and I hope that he's included in the anime somehow. The HELP on the wall, and the inclusion of his cookies implies that he exists, I'm really hoping they didn't scrap his character completely. This is where the anime and the manga completely depart one another.
I really enjoyed Goldy Pond. The new additional characters, the antagonist demons, and the setting all pulled me in, i swear i read this arc in a day. Rivals the jailbreak arc for me, I'm not sure which is my favorite. But i do have a few complaints.
One, plot armor. Oh my god plot armor. When the final hunt battle whatever takes place, these children are getting annihilated. It honestly felt like I was watching attack on titan, with characters getting wiped out left and right. When Emma is expecting ten of her friends to show up, and only three do, it feels like consequences. Feels is the key word here. I'm not positive, but I don't think a single character dies. There are plenty, and I mean plenty, of serious injuries, but they all make it out, get medical attention, and survive. I appreciate knowing more named characters, and I could understand if some of them made it out, but literally all the them do. Emma makes the most sense, she's the main character, this early in the story it makes sense for her to have plot armor. But it's cowardly to say they all make it, I think it's literally all 50 kids join their party.
Two, and this one is small, but I think they spend to little time in goldy pond. The fact that after Emma's arrival, she literally only has a first hunt and a final hunt feels rushed to me. Idk if one in the middle would have just been padding, but the fact that her first hunt is over so quickly (she saves a bunch of kids off screen) and the last one is the most effective, idk it just seems a little too perfect. Although I think the pacing in this arc is great, and idk if adding another hunt would have slowed it down too much. But it would have given us more time to meet and learn about the glory bell kids, I swear I couldn't remember who was where fighting what demon the whole time cuz I'd basically just met them.
Ok, the time skip here to me feels appropriate. Maybe not as massive as it is, but I appreciate aging up the characters and giving them more skills during this time. I feel like we missed a lot of relationship building, especially between the glory bell kids, the grace field kids, and the two adults, but I can accept it for what it is and move on.
Onto the bunker raid, I'm going to use this time to talk about how much I love Yugo and Lucas. Because I love them so much. Yugo is completely a mirror of Ray, and I appreciate that so much. Outside of his looks, I feel like his key characteristic is being too willing to give up. His character arc is so satisfying to watch, from hating and rejecting the children, to trying to kill Emma, to having a change of heart at just the wrong moment, to risking it all to get her back. Then, his reward for doing so is finding out that Lucas still lives. It works so well, and its why his death hits so hard. The final step of his arc is giving his life for the children, so they can have the family he lost, it just breaks me. It kills me because in the anime, the children get out on their own, it doesn't feel like real stakes or that they could realistically escape this threat. With Lucas and Yugo fighting, it feels earned, we know the abilities these characters have and know that they can handle this fight, even if it means at the cost of their lives. I'm so mad the anime screwed this up, and I'll never see this played out correctly. (Not to mention, I love Andrews death. At this point in the story, it feels realistic for the kids to be uncomfortable with taking lives, and I appreciate the burden being lifted from them here. More on that later)
Skipping ahead a bit, because the plot after this doesn't really stick with me, up until at least the reintroduction of Norman. I wish Lambda would have been more established, maybe even given us a whole arc about Norman's time there, and his escape. It bothers me so much that we don't see how he escapes. Outside of some illusions to Smee, it seems like Norman just smarted his way out, got all the other occupants to see him as a God, then proceeded to do what no human had done before. I wish we got more elaboration on the Lambda experiments, because to me it just feels like they gave these kids superpowers. Which sure, fine, whatever. I think I would be more ok with this if it was ever properly explored, but it isn't. Cislo, Barbra, and Zazzie all seem to have super strength, Vincent is smart boy, and Hayato is fast? I don't even know what Jin does, all we do is see him lose to Sonju. I feel this way about all of them except good boy Adam. I will not slander best boy Adam.
Back to Norman though, I think his reunion with Emma is wonderful. It actually made me feel something unlike the anime, which I knew was butchered before I even read the manga. I wish that Ray was there too, and was given a moment with him similar to emma, instead of being lumped in with the whole family. But who am I to complain? Ray stops being a character after Goldy Pond, maybe even before that, but he'll get his own section. Back to Norman, the time he spends with his family makes me so happy, watching him laugh and play with his siblings as a tall boy really hits home. But this is the last time I enjoy Norman's characterization, because after this I feel like I don't know him at all.
Now there's hints of this before the reunion. The fake Minerva call, the blowing up of the mass production farm, and how all the characters say he's completely different during the reunion. I understand that he spends a lot of time away from Emma and Ray, the horrific things he experienced at Lambda, and the other Lambda characters pushing him in a certain direction. But the fact that we never see this character change, the fact that he's apart of the main trio and we don't get to see the moment his character 180's, it doesn't feel earned to me. Granted, its not as bad as in Game of thrones when Daenerys 180's, Norman does spend time apart from us to make these character changes. But the fact that we don't see this character change I believe is what makes it fall flat. And it hurts because I think this is a good character arc, the antagonist is a part of the main trio for just a bit. I just wish I had a why. Now, as far as the genocide, I can rationalize how he reached that conclusion. I can fill in the gaps. What I can't wrap my head around is the lying to his family; lying to emma and ray telling them he'll wait and lying to Don and Gilda that he won't kill Sonju and Mujika. This bothers me to my core. The moments we see of him at Lambda, he's constantly thinking of Ray and Emma and how he wants to see them. His goals, his entire plan, should be going for them. The betrayal here doesn't line up for me, and at the same time I can't see how he's putting the Lambda inhabitants needs above that of his family. Norman went in a direction that I think would be interesting for the story, but the execution felt off. Maybe the justifications we are given are enough for some people, but it didn't feel right to me. Maybe I'm wrong.
Now, before I discuss the ending and Emma, I want to talk about Ray. Poor, poor ray, who was my favorite from the time I watched the anime for the first time. During the Jailbreak arc, he is my absolute favorite, his nihilistic sensibilities, the fact that he's mom's spy, the fact that he's known the secret all along, and especially the moment he tries to kill himself out of spite, I love all of it. He, to me, is the most interesting character during all of that. It's too bad that he basically kills himself, because we never see any of these interesting character traits ever again. Ray gets shafted so hard, it makes me so sad (It especially makes me sad bc he has the same voice actor as Killua, and now psuedo-Killua will have nothing to do for the rest of the show) but I digress. During Goldy pond, it's obviously Emma's Arc, so I understand him being sidelined a bit. Him and Yugo coming back to save the day works really well for me, no complaints there, outside it being the beginning of the end. It's honestly really funny, but if you go on Ray's wiki page, and scroll down to plot, after the Culvitalda arc, he gets 2 sentences a piece for each arc. If that doesn't show what happened to his character, idk what does. But even prior to that arc, its 'Ray and the group' do this and 'Ray and the group' do that. I'm so glad Ray got to live through his suicide attempt only to do jack shit. He's basically just there so he can support Emma, which is fine, but I wish he had something going on in his head too.
Now, quickly about the ending, because I read it so fast because I just wanted it to be over. I can describe the ending in one word: Convenient. It honestly doesn't feel like the characters do much at all. I'm specifically referring to after the queen is dead, because while I thought her character was a little flat, I enjoyed the conflict with her and the clan Norman tricked, that backstory was actually interesting to me. It also established how powerful and ruthless the queen was, honestly I didn't have too many complaints about this, outside of again, no character deaths. Or I guess no human deaths. Whatever. The main complaint i have is with Peter Ratari and the conflict he has with the kids. I feel like ever complication that he imposes on the kids is fixed very conveniently. Excuse me if I miss some examples, I'm doing this from memory and refuse to reread the chapter. So he captures all the kids at Norman's hideout, oh no. He brings them to Grace Field (I like that everything ends where everything began, if only they did anything with this) and puts them all in a storage area. Vincent does some hacker shit, and Emma and Gang go to rescue them. But then Vincent gets taken out oh no, but then he doesn't and is saved and rehacks things. And then oh no Sunju and Mujika are gonna get executed, but then yay Leuvis shows up and saves them! I'm honestly so down with Leuvis showing up again, but the fact that he helps change the government and saves the evil bloods and blah blah blah it just feels forced. Maybe if during Goldy pond there was more a discussion of ideology I would feel different, but this just came so out of left field. So now, oh no, the imperial army is surrounding Grace Field, oh no, but now the leadership has miraculously changed and now they're on our side! Yay! But oh no, now the sisters and mothers are all pointing guns at them! What will they do now? Oh well its all a fake out so it doesn't matter. I like Isabella changing sides, but I feel like this should have come earlier, because after we learn her backstory and see her 'wish the kids well' ig when they escape, its not a redemption, but we fs know she's not completely evil now. So when the reveal of bum bum bum she's now grandma and super evil! I'm gonna serve you kids up again! comes it doesn't really work. Because unless she was completely brainwashed or something, we know that this doesn't fit the kinda redemption we saw earlier. It's either a horrible twist mwahaha she's evil, or a really obvious fake out, which we now know it is. (I'm not sure how I feel about Isabella's eventual full redemption, I'm not sure she deserves to fully be redeemed and forgiven before her death, but regardless her death still gave me feelings because it draws from the first amazing arc. )
Ok, before discussing my final gripe with the ending, I need to talk about Emma. Emma emma bo bemma, the character who wants to save everyone, but really really shouldn't. Now, I think that this is an interesting character trait, someone who wants to save everyone but ultimately can't. But you see, the problem with this is, Emma sets out to do literally everything she wants the entire series. I swear to god it's her superpower. It's so reliable that characters literally forget their motivations because if it's something that Emma wants, then it's bound to happen! The one that sticks in my memory the most is Gillian, someone who has never met a friendly demon and was literally hunted for sport for years by them, just instantly switches her feelings about the genocide because Emma says she should. Now i'm not defending the genocide, I understand Emma's point of view on this. Genocide is wrong, shocker I know. But for characters that have literally had their entire lives tormented at the hands of these demons, characters that should hold as strong feels of hate shown by the Lambda experiments, I don't think they should just turn on a dime. It feels to fast, too rushed. I think something closer to her convincing Norman that his plan is wrong should have occurred, but then again you can't do that for every character, idk. Regardless, when Emma was initially against the genocide, I understand that. She has Mujika and Sonju on her mind, and all 5 seconds we see of her in a demon village, so I get that she recognizes that there are guiltless demons out there that aren't responsible for the fate of her people. You can't blame them in the sense that you can't blame everyone who's ever eaten a hamburger. Sure. But when she's against killing the Royal family, the aristocrats, etc, that makes literally no sense to me. Yes, it's in line with her character. By the end of the series, if you can say one thing about Emma, it's that she literally doesn't want to kill anyone. But this particularly doesn't make sense. Why? Goldy Pond, where she participates in killing all five of the poachers. Granted, she does try and talk to Leuvis before the fight, yk, her main character trait. But in the end, she helps kill these 5. Then why would she not have the motivation to kill the royals? She's literally from Grace Field, the farm that produces the highest quality meat, that means the majority of her family being shipped out would go directly to these demons. It means Connie, Hao, and every other shipped out kid was most likely eaten by these specific demons. I'm honestly surprised she didn't try and have a discussion with the queen about her ideology. Nope, thats Mujika's job. Anyway, her justification for this, if I remember correctly, is that without the ruling class, the people would fall into chaos. Yes Emma, the system that made you food is literally held up and made by these demons, of any of them, these are the ones that deserve to die the most, in the same vein as the Goldy Pond poachers. This might just be the bit inside me that craves revolution myself, but in a system where you are literally food, killing the ruling class might just be acceptable. Ok, ok. But now we get to the real part where Emma's main trait bothered me, with Peter Ratari. Oh Ratari, how you deserved worse than you got. When Emma tried to make friends with this man, I swear my head nearly exploded. NO EMMA. NOW IS NOT THE TIME. Hell, idc if you're against killing him at this rate, if Emma killed him here I'd honestly probably be pretty satisfied, but it would still be against her character and I understand that. BUT NO EMMA. DO NOT TRY AND BE HIS FRIEND. Idc put him in jail for all I care, make him the last human living in a demon world. Honestly, I think the most fitting end would be for him to be eaten. But nope, he gets to go out on his own terms, never facing any consequences for literally selling out his entire species. Knowing full well his ancestor betrayed the children's ancestors horribly. I think this a horrible injustice for the story, a character who's been built up this whole time, to only be so underwhelming. Even Andrew got his proper comeuppance, satisfying and without the kids getting their hands dirty. Instead the story just did me dirty. Sad.
Now, finally, after this novel I've written, I can talk about the epilogue. When it comes to Emma's promise, I honestly like the consequence. I can think of a few better ones, but the reward in this case works. I just wish we had more time to deal with the consequences. Emma not remembering her family is a good price to pay for them all getting to live free. She's not punished really, because she can't remember what she's lost outside of her dreams. This is a fitting ending I feel that leaves an empty, but hopeful feeling. And I don't even mind their reunion. I don't think it should have been everyone, mind you, maybe just Ray and Norman. But the moment she says 'who are you guys' really hits. My main problem with this is how fast us readers see them both lose emma, then get her back. We have literally a chapter of emma with santa man, (who deserves more time js) then they find her. I think it's about 2 years in their time, but it feels really flimsy for us because it's just a chapter. idk. This ending didn't make me angry, happy or sad, it just made me feel empty. The one consequence in the story is taken away, and thats how we end it. I basically would have felt the same way if they had killed emma, then immediately brought her back to life. idk.
To wrap this all up, I'd say my main issues with this series can be summed up in three points; character plot armor, rushed ending, and missed opportunities. First, the only real deaths (real deaths are named characters in my eyes) that the main story (I may miss some I apologize) Are Connie, Yugo, Lucas, and Isabella. Minerva if you really wanna stretch it. These are characters that we interacted with, felt their deaths, and actually worked within the story. There are others, like Dinah from Yugo's family and Monica, theo's sister, but I'm not counting these because they're not characters we actively see in the modern story. I'm sorry, but for a story with this high of stakes, where the literal premise is demons eating children, maybe more children should have died. Maybe attack on titan spoiled me by killing characters I liked, but even if all of the main trio survived, some named characters should have died. Some plot armor is to be expected, because you need characters in order for the story to go forward. idk. Never thought i'd be asking for more characters to die, but here we are. Second, rushed ending. Maybe I feel this way because I rushed through the ending, but by the end, or even before that, the strong pacing of the beginning of the story was lost. Literally went full speed at the end. Not much to say here. Finally, missed opportunities. If this story had taken more time to flesh out the interesting elements that the author created, maybe I'd have been more satisfied by the end. With such a strong start, with characters i loved so much, I wish i felt different. I really do. Supposedly the changes in the anime are to remedy these elements of the story. I guess we'll see! I don't have that high of hopes but theres always a chance.

It's not perfect, and I don't think I encompassed all my thoughts perfectly here, but honestly I've put enough time into this. Please let me know what you think, obviously this is all my opinion and feel free to disagree. Overall, The Promised Neverland means a lot to me. My first experience with it is still one of my favorites, and it's the first manga I read through and through. If anyone has any suggestions for others I should read, please let me know!

Recently a new trend in the anime industry has come to my attention. Isekai is right now the one thing we've gotten bored off, there are way too fucking many of them and it's so repetitive. Recently I've started to notice another kind of sub genre that's started to take root and grow and that subgenre is the dark, grotesque Shonen with a demon like entity and a lore filled world.This trend was started mainly by 2 series in the 2010-2015 Period. The series being, Attack on Titan, and Tokyo ghoul (manga). These were 2 extremely successful dark series series and the industry took notice of that. With Aot selling 100 million copies and TG selling 40 million
This was followed by a wave of dark, grotesque series getting serialized in Shonen Jump, these included the promised Neverland, and Demon Slayer. These series also turned out to be extremely popular and became some of the highest selling series in recent times. Demon slayer also set the highest record of manga sales in a year. It sold 84 million copies in a year, for comparison one piece which was number 3 sold 8 million copies. Demon slayer multiplied it by 10. After Demon Slayer and the promised Neverland blowing up, next came Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsawaman. These 2 again are extremely dark series featuring a demon esque force in the world. With Chainsawaman braking all bounds when it came to what was considered "Shonen manga".
The series I mentioned weren't the only ones in this genre to get popular and published during this time period, another example is hells Paradis, phantom seer and kimono jihen and even magic Madoka .
All of these changes combined may be signifying a new era for anime as an industry. Isekai will stay, it won't stop but it might just become another genre instead of the main thing every damn season. Kind of like moe, which was the dominant genre in anime from 2009-2013. What do you think of my mini analysis, am I being too optimistic ? Or anything else ?
PS: I know tokyo ghoul is a seinan but it still affected this change

S2's finally here! I legit can't believe it!! It felt like forever ago when I was keeping up with the show weekly, but we finally made it past the delay and have our first episode, which I really liked!
So, I thought it'd be nice to put together a post looking at the content that was cut in the episode!
Sometimes I'll do changes as well if they're important, but no all of 'em, 'cus we'd be here for twice as long.
I should say this also, what I say could definitely be proven wrong later. So if in hindsight any of my comments are wrong, feel free to point them out in the comments or disregard the fact that I said them. This also means you should be aware of the risk if you haven't read the manga.
Obviously, I recommend you read the manga yourself if you haven't already, after all, it's a really fun series!

At the start of Chapter 38, Isabella gets a telling off from the demons and Grandma for losing the valuable Grace Field Children. Whoever manages to find them will be generously rewarded. The fate of our favourite Mother is left ambiguous.

Heyo, Norman, we miss ya already. In the present, Ray gets a feel of the mechanism. Don and Gilda are not present in this scene.
It's at that moment that they look at their current location that most of the kids vanish, and it turns out they've fallen underground. The flying things you see in the episode actually reside down there and the snakes have a more prominent role! But anyway, their new task is to escape back to the outside, but these chapters (39 & 40) are all cut. I won't go more into that, just read it for yourself if you haven't! I think it was nice for looking more into the weirdness of this world.

Indeed he did. There also isn't the moment of melancholy from before, because after this they're chased by a demon! What follows this in the anime is mainly a mix of original stuff or manga, so let's go to the chase.

Initially, the kids don't even know that the demon is a demon. Emma points out how different it is to the ones they saw in Grace Field, with both how they're shaped like humans and can communicate. In addition, this one is trying to eat them indiscriminately, unlike the Grace Field demons who had to restrain themselves. The existence of this one demon raises a lot of questions in Emma's head, both about the demons and this world.
Don takes the lead like before, and there are some inner dialogue cuts from the other kids, showing that they were prepared for this and won't panic. They even say that Norman and Krone were scarier opponents!
There were also thoughts from Ray about how they can't keep running forever and need to find a way to get it off their tails.

Ray wonders what happened.
There's more inner dialogue cut, where Ray thinks about how everyone else is doing, and how he's going to get out of this situation with a demon that can kill in one swing. If not for the pursuers arriving, Ray would have completed his plan and returned to the group, so they had come at the worst time possible. The way they talk implies that they don't know where Emma and the others are, which works in his favour since he'll now make sure they stay focused on him. However, he doesn't plan on giving up his life, and promises to meet her at B06-32.

The chase with Ray is quite a bit simpler on both sides, with him just running in a straight line in the anime. Here we see both him and the demons strategizing to outrun or capture the other. Ray compares this situation to playing chess against Isabella. And we get flashbacks of him playing against her as a kid and getting frustrated while she doesn't even break a sweat. The leader tells the other demons to form a wolfpack around him, and we end up with him being caught.

Damn, I can't post more images. But, moving on, the fact that Sonju and Hooded Woman aren't with Minerva makes Ray think that there are other human groups, and it makes him more curious about the truths of this world. He's really glad to have met humans outside for the first time. Until he realises...yeah.
Before he calls Hooded Woman out on this, he says 'thanks' from the bottom of his heart and then poses that question. And from there, the episode and Chapter 45 end.

My last post was taken down due to me not following the rule to not post about the episode until 24 hours after the episode's release. I'll be sure to keep this in mind for next time, apologies for any inconvenience caused.
We're on a consistent wait from now on! Episode 3 has arrived! Understandably, there was both happiness and confusion. Despite that, I still think it was an alright episode. And here, in this series, we're here to dispel just a bit of that confusion. So, as usual, let's look at some cut content!!
Once more, anything I say here could possibly crop up in the future, rendering my statements here obsolete. This means you know the risk you're taking by reading this post, and as always, please read the manga if you're curious, it's awesome! Chapter 50 drops a massive bomb concerning the farms, I'll explain.
During the 5th day, the children are once again improving themselves for their departure tomorrow. Gilda points out that the tale that Sonju told them means there's no human society in this world due to the split. This makes sticking to Emma's plan (busting the other kids out and getting to the human world) because they lack the manpower to return to the farms and get to the other kids. She was wondering what they should do.
Emma goes to ask Sonju if they're more escapees or if he's heard a rumor. They know from before that there are many farms out there, which leads them to believe that there must be others.
Sonju answers that he hasn't heard of any. And if there were, there'd only be two at most. This new surprises the kids, and Emma asks what he means.
In this world, there are different types of farms. There are only a few top-class farms like Grace Field, and the remaining majority are mass-production farms. This is the picture above.
Those humans can't speak or have free will, and even if they developed some awareness and tried to escape, it would be unsuccessful due to their horribly unsuitable bodies.
Understandably, this shocks Emma, as they don't even get the false happiness they did, and is an even more cruel example of humans being raised only to be eaten.
In addition to this information, there are only four top-class farms in the world. So Minerva would be aiming to reach out to only those farms. Sonju knows the truth about how they escaped, but it would be difficult for others to do the same. And even then, it's difficult to survive, as they've seen.
They can't rely on other escapees. But as for the topic of knowing of them, Sonju does also mention that he's heard of rumors of demons stealing from farms to eat humans. That being said, they're rare. He considers this something they can use to their advantage, depending on how.
However, the truth of the matter was that there are no humans as highly intelligent as they are. As far as he knows, that is.

After a taxing eight-day wait, Episode 2 has arrived! For me, this was a major improvement from the first one with some really beautiful shots, filled with great moments both wholesome and dramatic, I definitely had a great time. It's been fun so far, I can't wait for more!

Observations and realisations. The ones that Emma does say in the anime said internally here, she also takes into the account the fact that it was nighttime when they woke up, which would have been enough time for the demons to hypothetically slaughter them.

Even though this nice line's in the anime, I should mention the change made. In the manga Emma rushes off on her own, leaving Ray and Sonju and Mujika. Sonju gives a small chuckle and asks what Ray's question was, and simply comments that he remembers being called that before, with Ray giving a face of shock. As you know, it was said to nobody in particular in the anime.

The two are able to make sense of why this is true based on what they've seen before.
After they leave to go to bed, there are more chains of realisations, which I'll describe here.
Since it's been a millennium since the Promise was made, and both paths are completely blocked, everything that the children have ever known to be human was simply fake human culture the demons made. But then, this assumption is dismissed as not all of was made up. Such as there being second-hand tech like the camera, and William Minerva's books containing his messages.
Those were made by humans in a human world, which means there's a way to go between the two. Krone had told them that there are humans on equal footing with demons that bring human culture to them, people from the human world. And if Minerva is involved in that process, then that means that Minerva must be going between the two worlds to do this.
Emma believes for sure that going to see him was the right move. They thought they might have to run away forever, or annihilate the enemy, but they have a concrete solution, escaping to the other side!

Moving on, in the short snippet with the pursuers, they actually do talk.
One of the demons reads off Ray's message and asks what it means, and Leader believes it's a message to the other kids that Ray carved, which is correct. The demons don't know what "06-32", though, but they do know the other kids are alive.
They're unable to find the corpses but believe they might all be alive, they don't know where in the forest they are. This is proof of Sonju's word and the kid's safety.

After the scolding happens and they continue on, Mujika says that they're good kids, to which Sonju agrees, leading into this page. For those who don't know already, garbled text is the name in the manga for Him or The One, who's allegedly an enemy of theirs. Mujika talks in what's basically demon language.

And actually...there's not much else to say. Emma says "Nothing." to Sonju while still outside in the manga, instead of the kids inside, but the hunter scene is pretty much the same, with some greatness sprinkled on top. Well, not that I'm complaining.
In addition, when they come back, Ray sees her expression and tells her to stop doing everything herself, before patting her head, saying they'll cook something delicious and cross the river and continue walking tomorrow. The exit to the forest is just around the corner. With that, Chapter 49 and Episode 2 come to a close.

Attack on Titan Final Season
If you liked the past seasons but you waited so long that you don't care anymore just give it a try, Season 3 has some sick animations and the Final Season is interesting too. MAL
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
In my opinion it was more hyped than it should have been it felt pretty rushed early on and they kinda forced emphaty but it was still realy good if you like shounen animes in general. It's one of the higher quality ones aswell. MAL
My Hero Academia
If you did not finish or even start it give it a try. Some shounen anime always follow the principals like friendship is power and nothing bad happens ever so it's a killer for some people, but MHA isn't quiet like that (atleast not that obvious). If you like the Zero to Hero type of Animes this one will be your pick since it's a high quality Anime aswell. MAL
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Yes it's an isekai, but in my opinion one of the better ones. As you can speculate in the title it starts off on the Monster side with the MC being a Slime. It starts off strong aswell in my opinion because it has that civilization kinda feel because he starts from scratch trying to build his empire by meeting people and building homes and more. It sadly gets cliché in my opinion in the 2nd half of the anime and focuses less around civ and stuff but still if you are a fan of isekais and shounen MUST WATCH. MAL
Dr. Stone
What a unique anime that one is. With Humanity being petrified to stone from something unknown the world turned back to the stone age. Senku a genius that loves science with his mind still being intact has a goal of reviving all 7 billion people and getting back all technology and everything with the power of science. But not everyone wants to revive all 7 billion people.
The Promised Neverland
If you look for something entirely new The Promised Neverland gottchu. It's about a friendly loving orphanage with small children and their "mom". Some of the older kids learn the truth about that orphanage. It's a farm and not an orphanage and they try to flee. All they know is that Monsters rule the world. It already has a 2nd season so if you are looking for story in an anime this one is your pick.

The Rising of the Shield Hero
It's in my opinion the best Isekai anime out there. In comparison to others i would call it high quality and very entertaining. I could say more about it but just watch it if you like Isekais. MAL

Oh boy i love that one. It's in the edo-period (i think thats what you call it with samurais and stuff and wars). The story is about a boy that got birthed with no arms/legs/skin/eyes NOTHING only the will to live because of a father that prayed to the demons willing to give everything so that his land stays fertile. Put on a boat down the river it follows the boy that wants everything back.. but how?

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar
What would actually happen if we transported to another world? Would we really be able to kill goblins etc.and go on adventures for a living? Would we really be strangely athletic instantly? thats what this anime got me thinking because thats kinda the story. A group of teenagers transported to another world and among them normies like you and me that have to earn money and make a living through the "Guild". But fighting is not that easy. This anime has a good artstyle aswell. MAL

Spurred by the mixed reception of the latest and almost final chapter of Attack on Titan, I've been reminded of this thought again. AoT is one of my favorite stories ever and I'm withholding my judgement on it's recent developments until the manga ends. But here we have a series that is called a "masterpiece in the making" left and right and sits atop the rankings of ALL anime for a season that isn't even finished, while the latest manga chapters leave a sizeable portion of people quite disappointed. And while AoT could be said to have rightfully earned a lot of this goodwil, I still think think that this is an illustration of a larger problem.
Every anime season, there is this new, supposedly excellent anime that gets showered with praise. All the usual YouTube creators latch onto to explain how brilliant it is, only for 1) the show to turn out quite average, or 2) immediately go downhill in the following season. Demon Slayer, One Punch Man, Promised Neverland, My Hero Academia, they all suffered from either the first or second problem imho. This has gotten to the point where I actively avoid the currently hyped "mega anime" because I fear that I just can't judge, let alone discuss it properly with all the fanfare around it. This is the reason I have yet to watch or read Tower of God and Made in Abyss.
I'm not saying people shouldn't get excited, but the AoT situation has gotten me to think that we need to calm down a bit and not let ourselves get carried away. To illustrate it with AoT again: we had manga readers rubbing into people's faces that they are "not ready for Season 4" like they belonged to the marketing team, and currently we have tons of videos proclaiming the ongoing season a masterpiece and that "soon AoT will break you" in ominous cringe. The internet allows eachother to share their joy at an ongoing series and feel like part of a community, and that's great. But I can't shake the view that the hype gets systematically overboard in the anime/manga commnity, in a way that I am not seeing elsewhere. And even if it isn't a problem that's especially bad for anime/manga, this community could become more conscious of it and reduce it all the same.
Or do you disagree and think that I am the one going overboard with this?

I’m all for happy endings but the way certain things turned out, in such quick succession, not only belittled the significance of “God”, but felt fan made. Also, wasn’t feeling how they made a main protagonist out of the trio and would’ve preferred to have Norman’s perspective more throughout the story but that’s just me. Norman looking like a side character is meh and there shouldve been more backstory to whatever that hybrid demon/human in place of worship was (aka god). Bash me in the comments, but the author could’ve really built off the climatic of killing the Queen but that was where the story felt like the author was done although he/she tries to fool us with multiple desperate situations that turn out completely fine.
If it was me I would’ve made the “necklace” given to Emma the “Key to God” and give a backstory explaining close relations between God & Mujikas bloodline while also learning the origin of God. Throughout this I would develope the story around the resolve of the “TRIO” and have them all desire to reforge the promise with a promise of their own specific to their resolve. This would create a divide between them but also a potential climatic unison between the 3 protagonist when they decide to meet God together in a race to get their selfish promise realized. In order to get to “God” they would have to play the ultimate form of “Hide and Seek” to find it, with their conscious/unconscious mind playing against them. Each go through a certain trial and end up able to find & make a promise to God, but the “Promise” & “Reward” is never exactly the same & they aren’t allowed to tell anyone the “Reward”. what remains given though is “The Promised Neverland”. It’d be like season 1 where the 3 main characters all had selfish desires but a desire for freedom nonetheless but now it would be portrayed in the ultimate form (not to say it wasn’t already after season 1).
Emma: desires for the abolishment of human encampment but not at the expense of the demons
Norman: wants to eradicate the existence of demons & gain freedom for all ”cattle children” specifically
Ray: wants the safety and freedom of his Family to live

 All desire The Promised Never Land. 

But each Promise requires a unique reward as a result of their resolve & as the story unfolds, either they will return to God with 1 unified promise or remain divided to live in the world of demons preparing the other cattle folk (humans) for the journey to the Promised Never Land. (I recommend this option because something about a kid being allowed to make a world reforming deal with God is off putting and belittling; this option would allow them to age a little more and mature their resolve.)
Edit: this idea would also be super reflective of the Nativity story of Jesus Christ and could’ve sparked many great discussions...

So currently, I hate Hunter x Hunter (2011). It is either my least favorite or second least favorite anime I’ve seen (I’ve only seen like twenty but my point still stands). It’s one of only two anime (this and Gurren Lagaan) that I had to drop early because I couldn’t finish it. And I know that everyone has their likes and dislikes and something that I’ve been working on lately is accepting that I’m not going to love everything that the general public loves and that’s ok. But one thing that I can’t accept is the fact that I don’t like HxH. Because I want to like it. I want to be able to enjoy it like everyone else seems to. Because the people that I’ve seen that like it swear that it is an S-tier, GOAT anime. And i just don’t get it. And it’s something that has been bothering me for the past couple of days and I don’t have any weeb friends so I’m gonna rant about here because maybe there will be a someone who can help me love HxH. Sorry in advance for a potentially long rant. Also sorry if this is a topic people talk about a lot and I’m just reiterating other peoples words.
So first off, I want to talk about the things that I did like. I really like Gon and Killua. Their friendship was great and I think they are good protagonists. Kurapika was cool and I didn’t like Leorio at first, but he grew on me. I liked the short tournament at the end of the exam arc. I enjoyed the big tournament at the big tower place. Hisoka is fun. And for the most part, I enjoyed the Gon vs Hisoka fight. And that’s about where my enjoyment stops.
So the first thing for me about HxH is that what I watched (the first two arcs/seasons and half of the third one) was boring as hell. It took me two months to finish the first season because I didn’t feel like putting energy into watching it. Halfway through the first season, I started watching it dubbed so I could multitask while watching. It just felt like nothing interesting was happening in the exams. It all felt drawn out and slow and there weren’t any stakes that made me invested in rooting or caring for the characters. Like in Demon Slayer, a show that I like but certainly don’t love. For most of the show, I was bored too but Tanjiro and Nezuko’s relationship and his strong desire to save her made sitting through the first 18 episodes a lot easier. Also jt felt like there were intense and life-threatening stakes that made things more interesting. Also the animation was gorgeous but we all knew that. Hunter x Hunter just didn’t have anything like that. Not that a show needs to have life threatening stakes, but something greater than “failing a test that they can take next year” would be nice. I love Gon but I only felt compelled to root for him because he was the protagonist and not because I actually cared what he was going through.
Also something that hindered my experience was what I expected the fights to be. Now this is mostly my fault for getting my hopes up. Most of my exposure to the show before watching it was edits on Tiktok and those made it seem like this show had these intense fight scenes and I never got to see them. Now I know that most of those fights weren’t until the Chimera Ant Arc, but I had hoped that I’d at least see a good fight in the first two seasons. And I really only got one which is less than ideal when going into a shonen. Which isn’t to say that I need fights in my shonen. The Promised Neverland which is in my top ten favorite shows (not just anime, TV shows period) doesn’t have fights at all. Well, not the typical shonen ones anyway. Speaking of fights, I want to briefly mention Nen. First, I think Nen is a stupid name. Second, I think that the four principles stuff is weird and didn’t make a lot of sense to me. And lastly, I think the show does a bad job of explaining nen at first. Maybe I’m just stupid, but it took me a while to understand what Nen was and how it worked. I understand it now and I do think that is a unique and interesting power system, but it is slightly frustrating when a show doesn’t clearly explain something so integral to its world.
It’s also frustrating that something so integral isn’t even integral until season two. Imagine how weird it would be if Avatar or FMAB (A show I also recently started) didn’t bring up bending or alchemy until season two. Let me walk you through how I found out that nen or even fights were a thing in Hunter x Hunter. At first I thought Hunter x Hunter was just an adventure show, no fights. Just these two kids, a blonde person, and a businessman exploring their world. Then I found out from Tiktok that Killua had lightning powers and I was like “Oh that’s cool. Didn’t know HxH had fights with powers but that’s cool.” And then I found out about Bungee gum cause of the memes. So from there I thought that Killua and Hisoka were there only two with powers for some reason. Then I found out from playing Jump Force on my Switch that Gon and Kurapika had powers. I was scrolling through the roster and I saw Gon and was like “Wait, why is Gon here? He doesn’t have powers. Wait, what is a jajanken? Lemme look this up...Holy shit a bunch of characters in HxH have powers!” And this was when I was like already twelve episodes into the show.
And lastly, my biggest problem with Hunter x Hunter is two statements I hear about it all the time from people that have watched it. It’s always something along the lines of “Hunter x Hunter is a masterpiece. One of the greatest of all time, a must watch for any anime fan.” and “The Chimera Ant Arc is when it gets good.” These two statements together piss me off so much. I don’t doubt that the CAA is a great arc like everyone says it is (and please correct if I’m wrong and people think it’s a different arc that’s the best or something), but one arc does not make an anime a masterpiece. If 5/6 arcs are mediocre and one arc is amazing (granted that arc takes up like half of the series episodes), then it’s not a masterpiece. Even if arcs 4 and 6 are great that doesn’t negate the first two seasons. It shouldn’t take 75 episodes for a show to “get good.” Especially when the first 38 of those episodes are very much not good. And maybe everyone loves the first two arcs and that’s what I’m missing, but from what I’m hearing, people are saying that an 11/10 arc surrounded by 6/10 arcs equals a GOAT anime. You wouldn’t call an album with two of the greatest songs ever surrounded by shit songs a masterpiece of an album. And the same goes for anime.
So that’s my rant. Sorry it was long I just have a lot of thoughts about this topic. I’m considering in a couple months rewatching the show and seeing if my opinion has changed or at least watching the CAA to see why everyone loves it. Now, I know it may not seem like it, but I really want to like this show. I want to understand the praise it gets and be able to praise it for myself. Feel free to give your thoughts on my opinions. Also feel free to share why you love the show and maybe it will help me appreciate it more.
TLDR: I hate Hunter x Hunter. Here’s why. I don’t want to hate it though so lemme know your thoughts on the show and help me gain insight.

I know that Re:Zero is already immensely popular in its own right but I have this gut feeling that certain scenes in S2 part 2 will give it the kick it needs to become fully mainstream. I mean it’s already very much anticipated but I feel like it has a good advantage in surprising a lot of people given that it’s a source material medium that is less accessible than popular manga series such as The Promised Neverland and Attack on Titan. I also believe that ‘Reason to Believe’ and ‘Choose me’ if done adaptation justice, will be very well received by anime fans alike and could be the ones to spike the series gradual popularity.
What do you guys think, do you have ‘Reason to Believe’ that if White Fox Studios does the second cour of Re:Zero Season 2 justice, this beloved series will start getting the gradual acknowledgment of Re:Zero being a masterpiece by the wider general anime community?
