Spades — 1.8
Walking into a casino, for the first time, can be quite an overwhelming experience. There’s so much going on — all of the flashing lights, various sounds, the diverse amount of people flowing throughout, the list goes on. No matter where you look, there’s always something going on that can potentially pique your curiosity. Of course, at this time in the midsummer of 2007, I hadn’t a clue of what to expect. I had yet to step foot inside a real casino.

When Chris called and invited me to go with him on a road trip up to Turning Stone, my mood was not only of excitement, it was also flowing with curiosity. I figured that making the drive up to Turning Stone would not only be a great deal of fun, but would also be an excellent opportunity to learn more about professional casino poker.

During my phone conversation with Chris, we agreed that we would make the road trip up there after we finished our Sunday shifts at Spades. This gave us about 24 hours to gather up our buddies and put together a crew. Our main goal was to crush some live action cash games there, but we also wanted to let loose and party. I didn’t yet know it, but my version of partying was vastly different from Chris’ version.

I made some calls and sent some texts, and not too long after, had a few of my closest friends confirm that they were going to come on the trip. I was the youngest of my social circle in high school, still being only 17 at the time. All of the other guys were already 18, so legally, they wouldn’t have a problem at Turning Stone.

If you don’t know, Turning Stone Resort & Casino is located on an Indian Reservation, and as such, the gambling laws of New York state do not apply there — the legal gambling age there is 18, as set by the law of the land.

Now, since I was still only 17, this presented a potential problem. However, I looked a bit older than I actually was, and I also had a fake ID that I had been using for a while. Chris was also incredibly confident that it wouldn’t be a problem whatsoever — he even offered to lay me a bet with 3 to 1 odds for $100, that at no point would I be unable play because of my age. I declined the bet of course, not wanting to jinx myself.

In 2007, Turning Stone was a “dry” casino, which meant that they didn’t serve any alcohol. However, you were allowed to bring your own, and could indulge yourself to your own desire. As of today, this is no longer the case, but that’s the way it was back then.

We calculated that the drive would take us about 4.5 hours, not entirely too long by road trip standards, but could be enough of a mental strain that could potentially effect our ability to play poker, upon arrival. Given that both Chris and I would be dealing right up until our departure, we had made arrangements to take two cars in order to accommodate our entire crew. In exchange for each of us paying for the gas and tolls on the drive up to Turning Stone, neither of us would have to drive — this would allow us to rest up a bit.

My group of buddies consisted of four of my closest friends — Brian, Theo, Max, and Scott. I had brought Theo around to Spades more than a few times, and he regularly played poker, unlike the others. However, he wasn’t very good, but he was very lucky, and he had no interest in studying the game. He got better the more he played, but was by all means, a fish. He loved to gamble, and blackjack was his favorite game — most likely not a coincidence.

I had invited Andy to tag along as well, but he wasn’t interested and declined — he instead made me a standing offer, an open invitation if you will, to go crush poker in Atlantic City, where there was better action and nicer casinos. However, the offer was only good if we would be going to seriously grind poker. This was an offer that I would later redeem.

Chris had assembled his boys just as I had — three experienced poker players and gamblers, each in their early 20’s, just like Chris. The youngest of his crew was Rich, who was 21, and the two others were Derek and Joe, either 23 or 24 years old.

Finally, our plans were set and the rooms were booked. We’d all be staying for 3 nights and 2 days in two, separate, 2 queen bed suites. I was anxious, yet excited, and I seriously wanted to book a win in the poker room, considering it would be my first casino poker room session.

Sunday finally arrives, and I had decided to wake up a few hours early so that I could stock up on booze and weed. My buddies and I had agreed to split the cost of everything — 4 bottles of Smirnoff, an ounce of Sour Diesel, and four 24-packs of Coors Light. In retrospect, this was probably entirely too much for 3 nights at a casino, but what did we know? I wasn’t a big smoker at the time, although I would partake, but I did enjoy drinking when the time was appropriate to let loose.

While on my way driving to Spades, I hear my phone ring — it’s Chris.

“Hey dude, you on your way to the club?”

“Yeah, I’ll be there in about 15 minutes. I just finished running some last minute errands, stocked up on booze and weed for the trip.”

“Awesome. I’m good to go on my end, too. By the way, my plan is to splash around in the $1/$2 or $2/$5 games Turning Stone spreads. I’m bringing $10k.”

“What?! $10k??? Why?!”

“Well, dude, I’m gonna hit the pits too and play some blackjack and craps. We’ll crush some poker first, then afterwards maybe you’ll hit the pits with me.”

“I dunno, man. I’m only gonna bring $2k in total, and that’s for all my costs. Maybe I’ll assign half of that to my poker roll for the trip.”

“You should probably stick to $1/$2 then, and save some of your roll for blackjack, to try and run it up.”

“Alright, sounds good. I’ll see you at the club in a bit.”

I wasn’t convinced about hitting the pits to play table games, but then again, I surely wanted to make the most out of my first casino experience.

I arrive at Spades, set up for the Sunday afternoon tournament, and put in the hours for my shift. I wind up dealing the final table, and the tournament ends at around 11PM. Chris was dealing cash, but we had both made sure to get Vinny’s approval to leave early and take off for the next few days. It wasn’t really an issue for me, being that once the tournament was over, it meant my job was done, and I was free to have a good night. However, Chris made sure to get another dealer to cover for him, both the rest of the night and until we got back from our trip.

Chris and I walk outside to the parking lot — it’s time to go pick everyone up. We each get into our cars and drive off to scoop up each one of our buddies. An hour or so later, I shoot Chris a text letting him know that I’m about to start the drive up to Verona, NY, which was where Turning Stone is located. He responds, telling me that he had already started the journey about 10 minutes prior, and that he’ll call me when he gets there.

I have Theo take the wheel and get into the driver’s seat, as I jump into the back to close my eyes to try and clear my head for what’s about to come. Without making any stops, we finish the drive in just under 4.5 hours. We can see the illuminated, brightly colored sign — “Turning Stone Casino”, and my heart begins to pump just a little bit faster. I’m beginning to get excited. At this point, it was around 4:30AM. Sure, I was a bit tired, but the excitement and novelty of my first casino experience was keeping my adrenaline pumping.

I give Chris a call, letting him know that we’re about to park our car, and head into the casino towards the check-in area.

“Chris, we’re here man! This place is awesome!”

“I know dude, we got here about a half hour ago. I’m in my room changing, getting ready to go play some cards. Did you check-in yet?”

“Not yet, we’re about to head over to the check-in desk and get our room keys. I’m pretty tired man, are you sure it’s a good idea to go play right now?”

“Don’t worry about that, I already scoped out the room. There’s some good action going on in both $1/$2 and $2/$5. I already put our name’s on the lists. Text me when you’re done getting settled in, but drop by room after. Make sure you come alone.”

“Okay… I’m gonna tell my boys that we’re gonna play some poker for a little bit, while they hit the casino floor. My buddy Theo might want to join us. I’m not sure though, I have to ask him. My boys will probably want to get nice and toasty before they head out of the room.”

“Sounds good dude, don’t take too long. See you in a bit.”

My friend Scott handles the check-in, puts the incidentals coverage under his credit card, and I make sure to get a copy of the room key for myself. We head up to the room, we all change into presentable, formal, evening attire, and I crack open a beer, along with everyone else. I ask everyone what they plan on doing for the next few hours, while suggesting that I’ll be preoccupied playing cards in the poker room. This was nothing but expected, they all knew how often I played poker.

Everyone unanimously agrees that they want to hit the pits and gamble, of course, after they get hammered in the room. I casually ask Theo if he’s interested in playing poker with Chris and I, but he declines, saying that he’s not in the mood and would rather play tomorrow night, if at all.

I finish my beer, but not before forcing everyone to agree to a bet, in order to make things more interesting — whoever comes back to the room as the biggest loser gets $50 each from everyone else. We unanimously decide that it’s actually a decent idea, and everyone agrees. I leave our room and head towards Chris’ suite.

I arrive at Chris’ door, and I give it quick, but firm knock. A few seconds later, the door opens, and I find that there’s nobody in the room except Chris. All of his buddies had already gone downstairs, and were gambling on the casino floor. I tell him I’m pretty tired, and then I ask him why he wanted me to come alone.

“Chris, I’m pretty tired, man. You sure we should go play?”

“100%. I told you, I already scoped out the games that are running. The stacks are big and there’s some good money to be made.”

“Alright, fine. But, why did you want me to come here alone, by the way? Is everything alright?”

“Yeah, dude. Here, I wanted to give you this. Take two of these, you’ll be in the zone while you play for the next 8 hours.”

“What kind of pills are these? What are they going to do?” — I had never really taken drugs or pills before, other than drinking and smoking weed occasionally. I did, however, try Mushrooms earlier during the summer, and that was fun, but was completely inexperienced when it came to pharmaceuticals, or any other drugs for that matter.

“It’s Adderall, it’s a stimulant. They’re 20mg each, take two of them. It’ll make you much more focused and able to concentrate on the game for the next 8 hours or so. You might feel a bit more chatty, and it’ll kill your appetite, but I promise you, it’ll give you an edge. All those players down there right now are tired and worn out from playing. These will put you in the zone, if you know what I mean.”

“Fuck it, I’ll give it a shot. We came to have a good time anyway. I’m not gonna lose control of myself, am I?”

“Hah, no, dude. It’s nothing like that. They prescribe this stuff to people who have trouble focusing and paying attention. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. You’ll feel them start to work in about 45 minutes to an hour.”

Chris hands me two, orange-colored, oval shaped pills, and I swallow them dry. I had stashed $1k into the safe in my room before I left, and I had the other $1k in my pocket. We leave his room and head downstairs to make our way through the casino and into the poker room.

I was in a state of awe. This was by far the biggest poker room I had ever been in, up until this point. There must have been at least 30 tables. There were only a handful of games going during our arrival, but still, seeing everything all neat, organized, and ready for action, made me think about what this place would be like during peak hours.

I check out the $1/$2 game that’s going, and I see that the buy-in structure is not at all what I was expecting. It’s a $50 min and $200 max. Sure, there’s a few deep stacks on the table, but I felt like this game was much smaller than what I was used to playing. I decide that it’s going to be far too difficult to make any significant amount of money, unless I end up on the good side of a cooler. Overall, it would be a bad move to sit in this game.

On the other hand, the $2/$5 game that was running had a $200 min and $500 max buy-in. This was definitely more up my alley. Several players had stacks with at least $1k, and the average was probably right around the max, conveniently right around $500. With several players sitting deep and a couple of short stacks on the table, I come to the conclusion that this is the game I want to play, as I’m fairly certain that I have a decent shot at making some money at this table.

Chris had already put our name’s on the lists for both games when he had arrived earlier, so it wasn’t too long until our names were called. We were going to be sitting at the same table, and of course, made an agreement that if we were to get heads-up in a hand, either of us would make only one bet, and then check it down the rest of the way if the other called the bet. We weren’t there to take each other’s rolls, but if there were other players in the hand, then we weren’t going to soft play each other, nor try and sandwich anyone out of a pot.

Finally, my name is called, about 20 minutes after Chris had taken his seat, and I head over to the cage to buy $500 worth of chips — $280 in red, $200 in green, and $20 in white. Something I’ve always liked doing, still to this day, is buying at least a full stack of $1 chips.

The poker room had relatively nice chips, and I found them to be most excellent. They had a comfortable weight, handled nicely, and displayed a decent aesthetic design on them. They were definitely of a higher quality than any of the chips that the underground clubs used. That’s not to say that the clubs used cheap chips — of course, a few did, however only the casinos would purchase Paulson chips, which are the industry standard, despite them costing over $1 each chip.

I take my seat at the table, and all of a sudden, I feel this intense rush of energy. It felt like someone had turned my brain up to 11. Woah — I felt my eyes widen.

I introduce myself to the table, and I notice that I’m much more talkative than my normal self. However, I was able to maintain and participate in a fully-engaged conversation, while not missing a single detail of the action that was unfolding during each hand. I could multi-task like never before. I was faster at thinking through hands, I noticed more tells being telegraphed than ever before, and I was aware of the fact that my observations were razor-sharp. It felt like I had been wearing blinders up until this point, and now they were gone.

I was more astute than I had ever been before, accurately being able to predict who was going to play a hand, and who was going to fold, before they even made their action. I was paying attention to the game in the same way I would as if I was dealing it. I’d observe each player in turn, then move on to the next when their action was made.

I would also catch things out of the corner of my eye — a player’s posture suddenly becoming erect, while they would then immediately try to look disinterested, as they used their hands to protect their cards in such a manner that was subtle, yet distinct from their normal method of handling their cards. It was blatantly obvious to me now, when a player would deviate from their normal patterns of playing, behaving, speaking, bet sizing, time usage, and so forth.

I was playing really well. All of my value bets were getting called, my bluffs were getting through, and alarm bells would ring in my head, either to alert me of a perfect spot to make a squeeze play, or if something about the hand didn’t “seem right”. Something I definitely noticed about the Adderall, was that it made me feel much more confident in the plays that I made. It was much easier to pull the trigger, and when I did, I felt certain that my timing was right.

My range was also wider than it normally was. I was playing more hands, going for thin value on the river when I would normally check back, and had no problem laying down strong hands preflop, when I was sure I was behind, but would normally be too stubborn to let it go.

My session was going very well. Incredibly well, in fact. I made several huge hero calls, and I applied intense pressure on opponents who I deemed capable of folding, only to pick up pots I could never win at showdown.

About 3.5 hours had gone by at this point, and within the last hour a new player had taken a seat. His name was Duke, at least, that’s what other players were calling him. This guy was super aggro. He was opening every other hand, raising every C-Bet a player would make, and would just bully people out of the pot by shoving the river or bombing the turn with a $300 bet.

The majority of the table was getting annoyed with Duke. Whenever they would fold, they felt like he was bluffing with air, however, when they would inevitably get frustrated and make the call, he would actually have it, and get massive value. During the course of about an hour, he amassed a stack totaling around $900. He had absolutely no fear, and the money at stake, to him, was evidently insignificant. From his perspective, it seemed as if he was playing for, what you and I, would consider pennies.

I folded quite a few strong hands to his preflop 3-bets — AQ, TT, 88, and QJs. I would open to $15 or $20, and he would re-pop me to 4x or 5x. I even open folded AKo on an Ace-high, 3-flush board on the turn when he check-raised me all-in, only to show me complete air.

That was enough for me, this wasn’t going to continue — not tonight. I had now decided that I was going to be as patient as necessary, and only get involved in a pot with him if the situation was favorable to trap him. You can’t bully a player when the money at stake means far less to him than it does to you. Subsequently, you can’t get value from that same player who is good enough to recognize that you’re only showing him aggression when you have it — they’ll just fold instead of blasting off, knowing that you’re praying that they’ll come over the top.

About an hour and a half later, it was around 10AM now, and I had built my stack up to around $1200. Duke was sitting on just about the same, though slightly less, about $1100. He was still bullying people out of pots, and the majority, if not everyone else at the table was clearly annoyed with him. Low limit players often become angry when they encounter an opponent whose style of play isn’t within the same paradigm as their own. The key is to be capable of adjusting your own style of play.

Finally, preparation meets opportunity, and I pick up pocket Aces in UTG+1. I raise to $15, and of course get 3-bet by Duke in the Lojack to $60. The button cold calls, and for a split-second, I almost 4-bet, but I resisted what almost felt like a reflex, and decided to just call.

The flop comes A5A — I flop Quad Aces! That was the first time I ever flopped quads, let alone quad aces. I stick to my game plan of trapping, and I check my quads over to Duke, who also checks. The button checks as well, and we see a turn of a black 4.

The board now being A5A4 rainbow — every fiber of my being is burning on the inside, trying to tell me to start getting some value and make a bet to build a pot. Again, I resist, and check it. Both Duke and the button check back.

The river comes in, a red 9. The complete board run-out is A5A49 rainbow.

I check, again, for the 3rd time. Duke fires out $200 into the pot of $187, the button snap folds, and I immediately snap-shove on him for a total of around $1140. He looks completely perplexed, and then goes deep into the tank. Not a single player had yet displayed this level of aggression against him.

He’s now been thinking for about 6 or 7 minutes, and he announces to the table that he’s sorry he’s taking so long, but he needs some more time and has a decision here. Some random player chimes in, telling him to take all the time he wants, it’s the biggest pot of the night.

Another 3 minutes go by, and I’m starting to get agitated now. It’s been at least 10 minutes, the dealer is clearly annoyed, enough is enough. I call for the clock. The floor comes over and gives Duke the “countdown” speech, informing him that he has 30 seconds to make a decision.

Before the floor even begins the countdown, Duke announces, “CALL”.

Under the influence of the Adderall, I assume, I inexplicably get the impulse to table my hand similar to the way a blackjack dealer would table their cards.

I pull both cards adjacent to each other, now sitting side by side. Using one finger, I flip one of the Aces face up, and then use that same Ace to slide it underneath the other, and flip up the remaining facedown Ace. I somehow managed to pull this off with such finesse, that it all happened in one, smooth, fluid motion. It was most certainly a rare form of poker showboating, and it was an incredibly cocky, and unnecessary thing to do, however I just couldn’t help myself. I had just decimated the guy who was running over every single player.

The entire table is shocked to see that I reveal flopped quad Aces. Even more surprised, is Duke. He is absolutely stunned to his core. He tables Jack high. I immediately stand up from my chair, and lean in closer towards the table, while rubbing my eyes to confirm — yes, indeed. Jack high.

“You triple checked flopped quad aces.” — the tone of his speech indicating a statement, not even close to what asking a question would sound like, as if he was in disbelief of what had just happened.

“Yes, sir.”

“I just called you with Jack high.” — again, it seemed as if he was confirming, for himself, the reality of the situation that had just occurred.

“Yeah, you did, but why?”

“I couldn’t put you on a hand, and I thought that you had finally had enough of me pushing you out of pots. It didn’t make sense, how could you have anything there when you checked the whole way?”

“I took a risk, and I just figured that you would eventually try and steal it.”

“I’m not even mad, kid. Well played, very clever. I salute you.”

The dealer ships me Duke’s entire stack, plus the pot, and I toss him two green birds. I quickly start to stack all of the chips while I fold the next hand, and then I get up from the table, as does Chris.

“Dude! What a sick fucking play! What in the fuck! Triple checking quad aces?!!?!?”

“I know, right? I was waiting all night for that moment. I got stupid lucky that he called. I have no idea why he called me with Jack high. I mean, I heard what he said, but still, why? How?”

“You figured him out, dude. Plain and simple. Really nice play, I’m impressed. I don’t think I could ever have triple checked that.”

“Thanks, Chris. I think it was just the Adderall. I just felt like I absolutely knew that he was going to do exactly the same thing that he has been doing all night. Whenever he senses weakness, he bombs the river. I wasn’t expecting him at all to call my shove, but I knew that if I bet into two players while out of position, on an ace-paired board, after calling a 4x 3-bet from Duke with the button cold calling, they would both fold.”

“That actually makes a lot of sense. Great play, dude. Seriously, that was just sick. Let’s get out of here and see what the other guys are up to.”

Chris and I cash out, and we leave the poker room. I ran $500 up to about $2300. Chris booked a nice win himself, running $500 up to $1.1k. We both tipped the cashier behind the cage $10 each.

The two of us are still wired from the Adderall, but now only physically stimulated, and not at all under the influence whatsoever. Sleeping is not going to be an option, so we decide to head back to my room, and get to work on polishing off a few beers.

I insert the keycard into my room’s key slot, and slowly open the door, as I hear a circus of ruckus coming from inside the room.

All of the guys are inside — Theo, Brian, Max, Scott, Rich, Derek, and Joe — they’d gone through two bottles of Smirnoff, a bottle of Jameson that Rich had brought over, a 24-pack of Coors Light, a ton of the weed, and had now moved on to blow, which one of Chris’ buddies had scored from someone in the casino.

As far as I knew, none of my friends had ever done coke before. I certainly hadn’t. Everyone seemed to be really enjoying themselves, though, and who was I to judge? I had just played an intensely long poker session on some drug I had never heard of before, I won a bunch of money, all was good, and so I just went with the flow and chalked it up to an isolated incident on a vacation-like casino trip.

I asked my boys who had lost the most money, both as a way to settle the bet, and to make a subtle brag about how much I had won playing poker. I wasn’t surprised at all — Brian was the biggest loser, totaling a net loss of a measly, yet exact, $100.

He was by far the cheapest person out of all of my friends. He would always argue down to the penny when it came to splitting checks, or getting reimbursed for fronting money for a purchase. Indeed, he sure was cheap, but he wasn’t at all stupid. He made sure that the other 3 guys — Theo, Max, and Scott — lost less than he did so that he could come out ahead on the bet. Of course, he took a gamble by not knowing the status of my winnings, but the worst that could happen was that he would either lose $100 or book a win taking a gamble with it. The 4 of us each paid up, $50 each, and he offset his $100 loss with a $200 gain, for a net profit of $100.

We all continued to drink, I tried a few lines myself, and everyone stayed up until the upcoming evening — it was now time to go gamble again. So, what did we do? We drank even more, smoked a blunt, and finished off the 8-ball of blow.

The 9 of us were thoroughly bombed. Any and all traces of our decision making skills were completely distorted.

Joe was playing $100 flips with Derek — they would cut a deck of cards and whoever cut to the higher card would win. Rich was playing beer pong with Scott for $50 a match, Theo, Max, and Brian were playing $20 rolls of C-Lo with dice that they had bought from the gift shop, and Chris and I were having a pipe dream discussion about how much we were going to win playing blackjack in the next hour.

About 30 minutes later, all of us, while undoubtedly lacking full consciousness, head down to the casino floor and make our way into the pits.

This time, I brought my entire roll, and so did Chris.

The first thing we did was stagger over to a roulette table, only to sloppily introduce ourselves to the dealer.

“Hey sweetheart, listen, we need your help. Black or red?”

“Are you trying to ask me whether I think you should bet on black or red?”

“Ya, of course. You know how you’ve been spinning that ball. Black or red? Which are you feeling?”

Chris and I both take out our rolls and count out $1,000 each.

“Whatever you pick, sweetheart. If we win, you get 10%. If we lose, you think you could get us a comp for 9 to the Wildflowers restaurant?”

“Put it on black, boys. How about we just concentrate on winning for the time being?”

“Let’s do it! $2,000 on black!”

With a quick flick of her forefinger, the dealer launches the tiny ball into motion, and it begins to spin around and around the track of the roulette wheel. The dealer waves her hand over the table to close the action.

“No more bets!”

To be continued…

[PRE-FIGHT THREAD] Demetrius Andrade vs Artur Akavov; Bryant Jennings vs Oscar Rivas & Undercards

Boxing fans are in for a treat, with two Friday night cards in the state of New York featuring a host of familiar names.
DATE Friday 18th January 2018
LOCATION Madison Square Garden, New York, USA
TELEVISION DAZN (USA), Sky Sports Main Event (UK), Canal Space (Latin America), Cable Onda Sports (Panama)
MAIN EVENT TIME 10pm (NYC), 7pm (LA), 4am Sunday (London), 3pm Sunday (Sydney)
Demetrius Andrade (26-0) headlines Matchroom Boxing's show at MSG, as he defends his WBO World Middleweight Title against Artur Akavov (19-2). For those of you scratching your heads at the name Akavov, he's the Russian fighter Billy Joe Saunders put in a stinker of a performance against, when Frank Warren randomly put on a fight in a leisure centre just outside of Glasgow. Saunders scored a points victory that evening, and few are expecting this to be anything other than a routine win for Andrade.
Sexy Venezualan Jorge Linares (45-4) is back in action for the first time since his August 2018 knockout of Miguel Cotto's second cousin, Abner. He'll be facing off against Pablo Cesar Cano (31-7), a Mexican fighter who's been in with some big names over the years. Cano has registered wins against Mauricio Herrera and Ashley Theophane, while tasting defeat at the hands of Erik Morales, Shane Mosley, and Paulie Malignaggi.
The IBF World Super Bantamweight Title is at stake, as TJ Doheny (20-0) looks to keep his unbeaten record and belt against Japan's Ryohei Takahashi (16-3-1), while the avocado-consuming, caged beast known as Chris Algieri (22-3) continues his professional boxing comeback. After two years out of the game, Daniel Gonzalez (17-1-1) will be Algieri's second opponent in seven weeks.
For those of you in New York thinking of going tonight, the under-undercard starts at 5:15pm, and full details can be found on Matchroom's wesbite.
DATE Friday 18th January 2018
LOCATION Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York, USA
TELEVISION ESPN+ (USA), Box Nation (UK
MAIN EVENT TIME 10pm (NYC), 7pm (LA), 4am Sunday (London), 3pm Sunday (Sydney)
Bryant Jennings (24-2) looked good when he lost to Wladimir Klitschko back in April 2015, but a TKO defeat against Luis Ortiz eight months later, gave him back-to-back losses, and he hasn't stepped back up since. A two-year layoff was followed by five routine victories in twelve months, and he now faces the unbeaten Canada-based Colombian Oscar Rivas (25-0) in a Top Rank production. At the age of 34, Jennings' needs to make a statement if he still harbours dreams of mixing it at the top again.
Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson (9-0) takes on Jessie Cris Rosales (21-1-1) in the Featherweight division. Despite Rosales' decent-looking record, all three of his fights have been in the Philippines, where he won his inaugural national title against a man with a 13-25-2 record, coming off an 11-fight losing streak. Stevenson is expected to make it ten out of ten.
What are your thoughts, /boxing? Most of these fights seem pretty easy to gauge, but do we have anyone predicting a surprise or two?

Live Round by Round Coverage:
Ruslan Provodnikov vs John Molina Jr
Round 1
Molina flashing the jab, Provo stalking forward with a high guard and manages to get Molina in the corner rather quick but doesn't do much. Molina throws a couple punches but they are blocked by Provo. Provo good jab to the body, Molina gets in a over hand right, but it doesn't have his full power behind it. Fantastic looping left hand from Provo, Molina trying to keep Provo at bay, but Provo goes to the body while Molina is on the ropes. Provo again with good body work. Very, very close round, going to edge Molina due to volume but Provo landed the harder punches. Swing round.

Molina 10-9

Round 2
Molina in the corner right to start, moves his ay out of the corner and Molina lands a massive right hand to the head. Great right hand from Molina, Provo answers with crips right hands to the head. Great uppercut from Molina while inside, Molina moves to the outside and starts to jab. Another good uppercut from Molina while they're inside. Molina ends up back in the corner a the end of the round and both fighters exchange clean blows. Another very close round, I'm edging towards Molina who dictated the course of the fight. Another close round.

Molina 10-9, 20-18

Round 3
Molina goes to work at the start of the round trying to keep his distance but Provo continues to move forward and lands a fantastic lead left hook. While infighting Molina gets in good fights, but Provo gets in a tight left hand tot he head. Molina with a great right ahnd to the body, but Provo charging forward. Molina moves back and starts to flash the jab over and over which keeps Provo at bay, but every Provo shot lands with thunder. Molina controlled the distance for the majority of this round and managed to land clean crips shots. Provo did well, but didn't dominate the round.

Molina 10-9, 30-27

Round 4
Molina trying to keep the bull off him, and keep Provo moving. Molina is doing a great job a the opening of this round to keep Provo at a distance. While in the phone booth, both fighters get in their work, nice upper cut from Molina, answered by Provo with a sharp right hand. Provo's punches are just so much harder this round you have to edge him. I feel like Molina might have landed more flush shots, but it's Provo who landed the harder punches.

Provo 10-9, Molina 39-37

Round 5
Provo really turning up the head at the start of the round and going after Molina. Molina doing his best to utilize the jab to interrupt Provo's attack. When on the inside Molina does a great job with the right uppercut. The movement is being dictated by Molina at this point, which is going to be typical of the rounds he would win. Molina just dips low as a massive overhand right from Provo. Provo follows it up with another right hand that semi-lands. Very tough rounds, but this was Molina's round because he was able to control the distance and when in-fighting he was able to avoid most of Provo's punishment. The round ends with a great flurry from Provo & a couple shots from Molina. Great round.

Molina, 49-46

Round 6
Provo tires to get him against the ropes and Molina ties up quick. Molina's ability to keep distance is what will win him this fight if he can keep it up as the rounds go on. Provo gets 1 good jab in, while Molina gets in 2 nice jabs & a couple 1-2's. The 1-2's might not seem like much but really they serve ring generalship. Provo having limited success, but Molina is keeping up the lateral movement. Provo gets in his first great punches of the fight. Provo might have found a little something on how to land on the evasive Molina.

Molina 10-9, 59-55

Round 7
Sure currently I have a wider scorecard for Molina right now, but I feel like Provo is just about to start poppin' off! Molina fires off about 10 jabs in as many seconds to open the round. Provo answers by moving him into the corner and landing a thudding hook. The fight ends up back in the middle of the round where Molina is able to outbox Provo. A nice crisp right hand from Provo lands clean and rocks Molina a bit but recovers very well. Molina sticking to the jab, following it up with quick 1-2's and enough scoring blows. Leaping lead left hook lands for Provo at the end of the round and Molina follows up after the bell... Very close round; swing round.

Molina 10-9, 69-54

Round 8
Provo comes out and fights like a fighter who is behind and moves Molina to the ropes and starts firing off punches. Provo really in stalker mode, Molina trying with the jab but Provo is walking right through it. Provo is also missing a lot of punches as Molina does have head movement. Molina's jab just isn't as effective in this round, Provo has missed his fair share of shots but has also landed really well too. Both fighters get in over hand rights at the end of the round! Total swing round, edging Provo because he's slightly impressed his will for the majority of the round.

Provo 10-9, Molina 78-64

Round 9
Very tough round, Molina doing his best to keep Provo at bay, while Provo tries to push forward. Molina sticking to his jab, while Provo doesn't make much of statement even on the punches he does land. Molina really getting in more and better work. Provo really looking to attack but not being effective at all.

Molina 10-9, 88-73

Round 10
Molina really able to keep the distance for the first minute of the round, neither fighter doing much with favors Molina who lands the occasional jab. Even with Molina in the corner Provo doesn't take advantage at all. Provo does land a left hook to the body twice. This was a very close round, although Molina controlled the pace of the round and did a decent jab with the jab, Provo actually got in a couple punches. The punches he did land were hard, which is why I'm giving Provo the round. Swing round.

Provo 10-9, Molina 97-83

Round 11
Great double jab left hand out of Molina who comes out really trying to land some fire works. Provo surprisingly getting work done from the mid-range. Triple jab out of Provo to find the distance, great shots coming out Provo. Molina gets in some good shot, but Provo overall had the better work throughout the round.

Provo 10-9, Molina 106-93

Round 12
So in this round Provo needs a lot of knock downs or a KO/TKO to win. Both fighters meet int he cetner of the ring and Molina is really lighting Provo up at the start. Provo gets in singular shot. Molina is doing a fantastic job of keeping the distance and keeping himself out of harms way. Provo lands a singular shot, but Molina easily follows up with shots of his own. With 10 seconds left Provo misses a wide looping hook.

Molina 10-9, 116-112

Official Score: 116-112, 117-111, 115, 113 for John Molina Jr. Unimious Decision

Blood streaming down Glazkov's face, Wilson misses a lead right hand.

Wilson 10-9, 38-38

Round 5
Glazkov is getting caught because he throws punches, lands a solid one, and stands there taking a picture. He's not moving or getting back on defense quick enough. Glazkov now following Wilson around the ring. Wilson bouncing around, eats a hard right hand from Glazkov. Wilson's punches appear to have just enough mustard on them to daze Glazkov for a split second, but not to hurt him. He lands another hard left hook on Glazkov's cut eye. Hard jab from Glazkov! They trade jabs, Wilson shakes his head, now he's smiling. Glazkov now coming in with jabs and straight rights. None landing particularly hard, but still he' landing shot, keeping busy. Wilson land a good hook to end the round, but too little to late.

Glazkov 10-9, 48-47 Glazkov

Round 6
Glazkov coming forward throwing and scoring, though his punches aren't hurting Wilson. Hard 1-2 for Glazkov. Wilson, now walking back, might be hurt. No, he lunges forward with the left hook. Wilson misses the knockout of the year punch. Glazkov appears to be wearing Wilson down now. Glazkov eats a right hook, gives a left hook. Wilson may have taken this round off, as he's only thrown a few punches. Glazkov lands a triple jab, not hard, but it landed. Hard left to the body for Glazkov.

Glazkov 10-9, 58-56 Glazkov

Round 7
Good head movement to open the round for Wilson and he lunges forward with a couple of left hands. Unofficially according to NBC it's a shutout for Glazkov. lol. Hard left to the body for Glazkov, now a jab catches Wilson. Another right to the body for Glazkov. Wilson misses an anger hook, and another as Wilson marches forward. Wilson eat a left hook. Lands a left hand of his own. Now a hard uppercut for Wilson!!! Glazkov takess it well. Continues to keep jabbing. Glazkov with blood streaming down both eyes, he lands a hard right to Wilson's head. Hard left hook to the body for Glazkov. Wilson is fighting in flurries and if he doesn't score a knockout, there's no way he's winning this fight. It's funny how the announcers say exactly what I type, only with a slight delay.

Glazkov 10-9, 68-65 Glazkov

Round 8
Hard right hand from Glazkov, but Wilson shows off his chin and heart by shaking it off. Wilson just misses a huge right hook, instead hitting the top of Glazkov's head. Glazkov continues to pull Wilson's head down when Wilson tries to come outside. Now Glazkov lands 4 punches from outside range before Wilson lunges forward with his patented roundhouse hooks. Glazkov showing tremendous conditioning, working Wilson's body. Wilson lands a huge right hand, Glazkov counters and Wilson, like a pitbull, continues to march forward.

Glazkov 10-9, 78-74 Glazkov

Round 9
Wilson is far too wide with his punches to effectively counter Glazkov. Glazkov lands a 1-2, Wilson shakes his head. Glazkov tries the body. Wilson just continues to walk forward. Hard jab and straight right for Glazkov, but Wilson doesn't look bothered. Glazkov is now just scoring and beating Wilson, but not hurting him. Good counter left hook for Wilson as Glazkov comes forward. Wilson complaining of being punched behind the head. Wilson, hands down, using his head movement to keep Glazkov's punches off. He throws a few wild hooks and Glazkov takes it well. Wilson did his best Sergio Martinez impersonation to finish the round.

Glazkov 10-9, 88-83

Round 10
Glazkov, coming into the 10th round, may win this fight... but Wilson has won the crowd and the respect of every person watching this fight. They touch gloves in the center and here they go! Wilson throws 4 wild shots and shakes his head at the counter shots Glazkov threw. Glazkov lands a 1-2 and Wilson slips to the ground. Wilson has thrown boxing out the window, he's putting his head down and just swinging both arms forward now. Glazkov staying disciplined throwing those straight hands. Wilson lands a left and a right, Glazkov avoids the 3rd and resets. 2 hard straight rightss from Glazkov, wilson shakes it off, now a right uppercut. And a left hook. Wilson looks a bit hurt now, though he shakes his head. Wilson wings a left hook to the body. Wilson looks energized by the crowd. Wilson lands a good jab, now a left hook, but he's getting hit in return. Hard right hand for Glazkov! They fight to the finish and the bell sounds. Solid fight! Though Wilson lost many rounds, he got a lot of licks in that won't show up on the scorecards.

Glazkov 10-9, 98-92 Glazkov

Official decision: The winner by unanimous decision (97-93, 98-92, 99-91) Vyacheslav Glazkov
Gotta love Wilson.

J’Leon Love 16(9)-0 vs Vladine Biosse 15(7)-2-2

10 rounds
super middleweight division
Love at one point in time appeared to be one of Mayweather Promotion’s fast rising prospects who would undoubtedly hold a world title someday, sooner rather than later. A meeting with Gabriel Rosado resulted in a controversial win. Leon was dropped in round 6 and later had the win turned to a no contest after he failed a post-fight test. Love has since fallen out of contention for title shot status and it appears he has a long way to go before rejoining the fold. This is another small step for him in facing Biosse. Biosse is a regional fighter who will probably sell a lot of tickets, but ultimately has come up short in his attempts against good opposition. He’s coming off a draw and a TKO last year against Marcus Upshaw. If Love doesn’t make easy work of this, serious doubts will arise about whether Love can ever compete at an elite level.

Mickey Bey 19(10)-1-1 vs Alan Herrera 32(21)-5

10 rounds
lightweight division
Bey is a very good prospect. His one loss came against John Molina who pulled off a nice 10th round upset after being thoroughly beaten for the other 9 rounds. Bey is slick, he boxes beautifully, and mixes punches up very nicely. Even after the loss, I still think he’s got a bright future if he can tuck that chin and stay responsible on defense. Herrera is quite experienced for a 24 year old. He hasn’t fought since last August where he was dropped and beaten over 6 rounds. Bey should have this in the bag.

Badou Jack 16(11)-0-1 vs Derek Edwards 26(13)-3-1

10 rounds
super middleweight division
Ok Badou Jack, it’s all up to you now. J’Leon doesn’t appear to have it. Bey already took a loss. We don’t really know what we got with Pearson. It’s up to you to carry Mayweather Promotions. Are you up for it? Maybe. I like Jack and his style, but there are still a lot of questions about his game. Edwards won’t be much of a test. He’s coming off a knockout loss to Matt Korobov. Jack will eventually be properly tested. Friday won’t be that day.

Robert Stieglitz 46(26)-3 vs Arthur Abraham 38(28)-4

12 rounds
WBO super middleweight title
Robert Stieglitz has held the WBO super middleweight title since August of 2009 when he knocked out Karoly Bazsay. There was a brief interlude in 2012 Stieglitz was separated form his title. An upset loss to Arthur Abraham who had previously been beaten by the real super middleweight champion of the world, Andre Ward, Carl Froch, and Andre Dirrell. In the rematch, Abraham developed a massive swelling out of his eye and the fight was stopped in the 4th because he could no longer see out of the eye. Since then, Abraham has won both fights he’s been in and while his last fight was a very wide decision, Abraham appears to have slipped quite a bit. The question will be whether Stieglitz has too. If he hasn’t Stieglitz will win an easy decision.

James DeGale 17(11)-1 vs Gevorg Khatchikian 20(8)-0

12 rounds
super middleweight division
DeGale was once one of the UK’s rising prospects in the super middleweight division. He then entered into a sink or swim fight with another undefeated super middleweight prospect. That prospect was a 23 year old named George Groves. Groves was the more experienced that night, and today he reigns as one of the most beloved fighters in the world (coming off a loss.) While Groves will be facing Carl Froch in the coming months, DeGale is still rebuilding. Khatchikian has a nice record, but he’s never fought away from his home in the Netherlands. Maybe DeGale can have another gut check fight with Callum Smith. (Note: Degale was originally supposed to be in an eliminator fight with Badou Jack.)

Lee Haskins 28(12)-3 vs Elton Dharry 15(9)-5-1

12 rounds

Hughie Fury 13(8)-0 vs TBA

Apparently TBA had foul words to say about Fury’s back acne which made Boxnation’s HD debut that much more glorious. I expect TBA to put up a hell of a fight for the first 15 seconds of the fight before Fury unloads a vicious body attack to put him away.

Ricky Burns 36(11)-2-1 vs Terence Crawford 22(16)-0

12 rounds
WBO lightweight title
I get asked this question a lot. Who are the best prospects in boxing? Or, who are the young up-and-comers out there that I should check out? You know where I’m going with this if you know about Terence Crawford. My next question is, are you a fan of slick boxers, the kinds of guys who can make their opponent miss and then make them pay? Because to this point in his career, Terence Crawford is that guy; I don’t believe he’s lost a round in his entire career. On Saturday he’ll fight for the lightweight title against one of the toughest guys in the sport… and Crawford is the favorite. Burns hasn’t looked good in his last 2 fights. He had a controversial win over Jose Gonzalez after Gonzalez quit with a wrist injury and Ray Beltran broke his jaw and dropped him. And yet, Burns has prevailed.
This is the biggest test of Crawford’s young career. If he breezes past Burns, all of our suspicions will be confirmed. If he loses, we’ll have to chalk it up to him being yet another product of clever match-making and HBO spotlight.
Burns has 2 losses on his ledger, both came when he was young and still fighting on the domestic UK scene. Since then he’s moved up to lightweight and hasn’t been beaten in 6 years. Burns has been dropped before, but has shown to have tremendous heart. With only 11 stoppage wins for Burns and Crawford not exactly being a devastating puncher, this has 12 rounds written all over it. I like Crawford in this. He’s got a significant reach advantage and very recently Burns has shown a weakness toward fighters who can box well. Crawford has proven to have next level boxing ability and will pose a lot of problems for Burns.

John Simpson 25(11)-10 vs John Murray 32(19)-2

10 rounds
lightweight division

Scott Cardle 13(2)-0 vs Paul Appleby 19(11)-5

8 rounds

Anthony Joshua 4(4)-0 vs Hector Alfredo Avila 22(14)-15-1

6 rounds
heavyweight division
Joshua seemed to be on the fast track in the heavyweight division, but either Eddie Hearn has lost interest or hasn’t been too impressed. Avila is tested and experienced, but Joshua shouldn’t have too much trouble.

Anthony Ogogo 4(2)-0 vs Greg O’Neill 3-1

6 rounds
middleweight division
Ogogo looked absolutely spectacular early on. He was the first of the British Olympians to get a pro debut and I was sure he was going to be a big hit in the middleweight division. He’s failed to stop 2 opponents and it’s since slowed his ascension down. I still think Ogogo will be special and a top contender at middleweight, but it won’t be anytime soon.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr 47(32)-1-1 vs Brian Vera 23(14)-7

12 rounds
super middleweight division
Making weight will be a victory for Chavez Jr. Beating Vera will only be icing on the cake. Chavez Jr has said that there’s a new maturity and responsibility in his life after the birth of his first daughter. If he holds true to his word, he’ll make weight and beat Brian Vera without any controversy this time around.
Vera has been training in a state of the art facility with a gameplan that no doubt includes having the stamina to overwhelm the plodding legend’s son with a ton of punches and movement. Vera began boxing late in life and his defensive lapses show it. He gets caught with flush shots when he’s out of position and those shots were the difference between winning and losing the first fight with Chavez Jr. Actually, I take that back. Not because it’s not true, in my eyes and any respectable boxing fan’s eyes that’s certainly true. But in the eyes of Gwen Adair and Marty Denkin (who both saw a resounding victory for Chavez) avoiding those shots wouldn’t have made much of a case for Vera to win the first fight.
I will say this about their first fight. It is true that Chavez Jr landed the harder, more significant punches. I thought there was a point when he could have stopped Vera if he turned up the fire. And yet, the most generous score I could have given in favor Chavez Jr was a draw. On the other side, a generous score for Vera would be something 96-94 at most.
Going into this fight, Chavez Jr remains the favorite. Bovada is asking for $500 bucks to yield a $100 dollar return. If Vera can use lateral movement and escape exchanges without going back in a straight line, victory will be his. Unfortunately for Chavez Jr, should he win this fight, Andre Ward will be his prize.

Orlando Salido 40(28)-12-2 vs Vasyl Lomachenko 1(1)-0

12 rounds
WBO featherweight title
Top Rank is looking to make history. They’ve got perhaps the greatest amateur boxer ever and they’re looking to make him a champion in only his second professional fight. It’s never been done. They looked at the landscape of champions at featherweight and chose Orlando Salido, fresh off a dominating win over Orlando Cruz, as the opponent for a guy who’s 1 fight removed from head gear and the lol amateur scoring system. They deemed Salido the better match instead of Simpiwe Vetyeka (Donaire gets him), Jhonny Gonzalez, and Evgeny Gradovich. (Gonzalez wouldn’t happen because of promotional issues.) If ever a guy with only one fight on his resume could win a title in his second fight, it’s Lomachenko. It won’t be easy though. Salido has some pop, he’s got massive determination, and he’s got a… “veteran” ruggedness to him. Will Lomachenko be able to deal with it? Betting sites have Lomachenko as a heavy favorite. I know Salido’s record indicates that this is all but a done deal for Lomachenko, but in the past couple of years, nobody has fought Salido and gotten an easy win. Even Mikey Garcia who knocked him down what seemed like 10 times began to struggle late and had his nose broken. My only question is can Lomachenko hang for 12 rounds? Salido will no doubt look to test that by pressuring him early and seeing how he holds up when the championship rounds roll along.

Juan Diaz 38(19)-4 vs Gerardo Robles 16(7)-12

10 rounds
lightweight division
The baby bull returns! Again. He fought three times last year after taking a three year hiatus from the sport. Diaz has always been a forward-marching brawler who brings action. Robles is coming off 2 straight losses (including one to rising prospect Jose Felix Jr) and has never done well against stiff competition. Even if Diaz was half the fighter he was before the hiatus, he'd take care of Robles easy. Look for an early stoppage here.

Oscar Valdez 8(8)-0 vs Samuel Sanchez 6(1)-4-1

6 rounds
featherweight division
My favorite prospect in all of boxing. He's polished, patient, puts together punches well, basically everything you'd want to see if you were building a fighter to someday win a title. I think Valdez, along with Luke Campbell and Zou Shiming, needs to step up their competition. I don't believe he's really learning much mowing through these kids that are clearly not as skilled as him. A step up would force Valdez to grow rather than refine what we already know he's good at. I promise you that as much as I praise Valdez, Bob Sheridan will make me look like indifferent on the TopRank.TV stream this Saturday.

Alex Saucedo 12(9)-0 vs Gilbert Venegas 12(8)-12-4

6 rounds
welterweight division
Saucedo is almost reckless. He's still quite green, but I like what I see out of him. This is definitely one of the better prospects out there and I think when they elevate his competition, you'll see him grow into one of the better, aggressive fighters out there.

Yodmongkol Vor Saengthep 33(20)-2 vs Takuya Kogawa 22(13)-3
12 rounds
interim WBA world flyweight title
Saengthep goes by another alias, Yongmongkol CP Freshmart. I didn’t even realize this was him until I looked closer. Anyway, CP Freshmart is on his way in the flyweight division. A win here will most likely earn him a shot against Juan Carlos Reveco somewhere down the line. It won’t be easy though. Kogawa once took Pongsaklek Wonjongkam 12 rounds. He came up short, but has since been a solid competitor on the Japanese domestic scene. I believe Freshmart’s power will be the difference here (as well as the fact that they’re fighting in his hometown.)

Nearly a year after being stopped by Caleb Truax, Don George returns at super middleweight against 41 year old Troy Lowry. Lowry, for my money, is in trouble. George is a guy who took Adonis Stevenson 12 rounds (before being stopped), Edwin Rodriguez 10 rounds, and he upset highly touted prospect Cornelius White back in 2011. Lowry is coming off 2 knockout losses and has been stopped by a who’s who in the middleweight, junior middleweight scene in the past 8 years.

This is going to be on Shobox and it’s promoted by Iron Mike. Collado is an interesting prospect. He hasn’t had a significant win in his career thus far, and like Mike Perez, is a Cuban defector coming out of Ireland. He’s 26 and Salka represents a jump in the level of opposition he’s faced.

This is going to be a good week for prospects. Well, maybe not to be prospects, but good for someone who likes to watch prospects. While the other guys on this card are undefeated, none carry the clout that Lubin does. When he turned pro, it was a big deal. Many felt Iron Mike had poached him off the American amateur team. He’s progressed nicely and is exciting to watch. He’s a free swinger with power in both hands.

TBA does not care that Spence is one of the top prospects in the sport. He doesn’t feel bothered by the rumors that Spence has knocked out championship level fighters in sparring. He didn’t even watch tape of Spence to see how well Spence can mix up his offense to finish his opponents in a variety of ways.

Scott Quigg 27(20)-0-2 vs Tshifhiwa Munyai 24(12)-2-1

12 rounds
WBA world super bantamweight title
First things first, this isn’t for the real WBA title. That title currently sits on the kitchen table in Guillermo Rigondeaux’s house. Either way, Quigg is ready to leave the prospect nest. Quigg is 25 and after putting a beating on Diego Silva, he now faces South African Tshifiwa Munyai. Quigg is a big step up in competition for Munyai. I believe Quigg should be able to pull off an easy win here and officially arrive on the world scene at super bantamweight.

Anthony Crolla 27(10)-4 vs John Murray 33(20)-2

12 rounds
lightweight title
Crolla may not be the most skilled lightweight out there, but he’s definitely one of the grittiest and toughest. This guy was in a fight of the year candidate with Gavin Rees last year where the 2 pounded away with body shots on each other for 12 rounds. Since being stopped by Brandon Rios, Murray has been on somewhat of a rebuild. Crolla represents another step up for him. His last 2 opponents had a total of 20 wins between them. I expect Crolla to be too much for Murray.

Josh Warrington 16(1)-0 vs Rendall Munroe 28(11)-4-1

12 rounds
featherweight division
Warrington won me over as a fan the last time I saw him. This guy went to war with an awkward guy for 12 rounds. Warrington threw everything he had at him and the guy just walked right through his shots. I mean, when a guy is 15 and 0 with no knockouts, you do that right? Well Warrington pressed on and in the final moments of the fight, finally overwhelmed his guy and the referee had to jump in to stop it. Munroe’s claim to fame is knocking out Victor Terrazas (which Leo Santa Cruz failed to do.)

Callum Smith 9(7)-0 vs Francois Bastient 43(18)-10-1

6 rounds

If I were to draw up a list right now of the top prospects in the UK, Callum Smith would have one of the strongest arguments to be the number one guy. Check this guy out.
From DC Armory, Washington, DC

Bernard Hopkins 54(32)-6-2 vs Beibut Shumenov 14(9)-1

12 rounds
WBA super world light heavyweight title
IBF light heavyweight title
Beibut Shumenov has quietly been a title holder at light heavyweight for 4 years now. He won it by split decision over Gabriel Campillo. Hopkins needs no introduction. He’s a living legend with his space in the hall of fame already reserved. At 49 years old, every little thing he does only enhances his legacy. His wins include Roy Jones Jr, Kelly Pavlik, Antonio Tarver, Oscar De La Hoya, and Felix Trinidad. Stylistically, Shumenov seems to be taylor made for Hopkins. He’s a slow, plodding guy who relies heavily on landing a power jab followed by a straight right. We have seen Hopkins beaten by an expert jabber, but that kind of jab isn’t the one Shumenov is looking to use. I think that Hopkins may actually outwork Shumenov and beat him on the cards. I’m excited to see Hopkins in the ring again. If Shumenov were to win, it would have to be by knocking Hopkins down a couple of times or even out. Shumenov lacks the speed to consistently beat Hopkins to the punch.

Shawn Porter 23(14)-0 vs Paulie Malignaggi 33(7)-5

12 rounds
IBF welterweight title
Shawn Porter makes his first defense of the IBF title he won by upsetting Devon Alexander last December. The winner of this fight will have a mandatory defense against the Special One, Kell Brook. This is a real interesting fight between Porter and Malignaggi. Malignaggi looked stunning against Judah and Porter’s relentless pressure allowed him to break through Alexander’s slick skills. My concern for Malignaggi and why I favor Porter is this: Does Malignaggi have the power to keep Porter from coming inside and working like he did in the Alexander fight? Malignaggi has a terrific jab, but is it enough? It’s going to need to be doubled and hooked off of to keep Porter on the outside where Malignaggi can’t lose. Does Paulie have the gas to do that for 12 rounds? We saw in the Alexander fight that Porter came forward all 12 rounds. I think at some point, Porter will find the opening and it will become a very different fight from that point.

Peter Quillin 30(22)-0 vs Lukas Konecny 50(23)-4

12 rounds
WBO middleweight title
What do you call a person from the Czech Republic? Czechi? Czech Republican? Konecny moved to middleweight a year ago and this will be his 3rd fight as a middleweight. Konecny was a standout as an amateur amassing somewhere around 230 wins. This will be the first venture out of Europe for the 35 year old. The last time we saw Quillin, he was entrenched in a war with Rosado where Rosado was coming on strong, but the blood coming from his eye was stronger. Quillin won by technical stoppage and retained his title. Quillin is part of a three headed monster at middleweight. There’s Golovkin, Quillin and of course Martinez with belts at the division. Quillin is probably the lesser of the three evils, though that will remain to be seen when Martinez faces Cotto. I don’t expect Quillin to lose, and I hope to see him face Curtis Stevens in the fall.

Sadam Ali 18(11)-0 vs Jeremy Bryan 17(7)-3

Sadam Ali was one hell of an amateur. He was on his way to the Olympics where he got blitzed in the very first fight and that dream was over. He’s probably going to beat Mayweather some day.

Orlando Cruz 20(10)-3-1 vs Gamalier Rodriguez 23(16)-2-3

10 rounds

Puerto Rican Orlando Cruz Cruz is coming off a loss to Orlando Salido on the Bradley-Marquez undercard. Cruz lost partly because he didn’t have the power to really keep Salido on the outside, however few have successfully kept Salido from coming inside. Cruz is a slick boxer with a nice jab and I think still has something left in him. Rodriguez hasn’t lost in 5 years, but he also hasn’t faced anybody good in… a long time. For my money he’s never faced a guy with as much talent as Cruz.

Felix Verdejo 11(8)-0 vs Ivan Zavala 6(2)-5-1

Verdejo is one of next stars of the sport, but isn’t going to keep progressing if we don’t start getting him some opponents that have lost 5 of their last 7 fights including getting knocked out by Ik Yang!!! Maybe they know something about Verdejo that I don’t. Maybe they’re trying to make this guy’s highlight reel so sensational that it alone makes people like him. Expect a brutal KO.

Matt Korobov 22(13)-0 vs Emil Gonzalez 11(8)-7-1

8 rounds
middleweight division
Korobov is Russian and lives in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Remind you of someone? He’s not as heavy handed as him, but he seems to be following the path of Sergey Kovalev. Korobov was a real good prospect and I think this is just a gimme fight because he’s fought far better guys than Gonzalez… but Gonzalez is probably the best available Puerto Rican they could find to stack this Puerto Rican themed card.

[WEEKEND RECAP] Bernard Hopkins vs Beibut Shumenov, Scott Quigg vs Tshifhiwa Munyai, Alexei Collado vs Rod Salka, Orlando Cruz vs Gamalier Rodriguez + more

Friday April 18

From Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York

Brandon Adams won a split decision over Raymond Gatica

Adams advances to the Boxcino finals.

Willie Monroe Jr wins a unanimous decision over Vitaliy Kopylenko

Monroe will face Adams in the Boxcino middleweight final.

From Convention Center, Monroeville, Pennsylvania

Rod Salka won a UD over Alexei Collado

Tough night for Tyson’s lightweight prospect.

Felix Diax won a split decision over Emmanuel Lartey

Sammy Vasquez stopped Juan Rodriguez in the 1st

Erickson Lubin knocked out Jovan Ramirez in 2 rounds

From Illusions Theater, San Antonio, Texas

Alan Sanchez stopped Jorge Silva in 6 round

Errol Spence stopped Raymond Charles in the first round

Saturday April 19

From Club Social y Cultural El Cruce, Malvinas Argentinas, Buenos Aires, Argentia

Javier Francisco Maciel on a unanimous decision over Cesar Adrian Sastre Silva

From Phones 4u Arena (formerly M.E.N Arena), Manchester, Lancashire, United Kingdom

Scott Quigg retained the WBA world super bantamweight title by stopping Tshifhiwa Munyai in 2 rounds

I wasn’t very impressed when I saw Quigg first starting out. I thought he was destined to stay at the domestic level. Then something switched. He figured Yoadris Salinas out, made an adjustment halfway through that fight and turned the ship around. He’s developed into a very effective body puncher and I’m curious to see how he matches up with the other super bantamweights… except Rigondeaux. Quigg finished this one with a beautiful left hook and a straight right.

Anthony Crolla stopped John Murray in 10

This was a pretty entertaining fight. Crolla has done a fine job rebuilding himself and I wouldn’t mind seeing him face Ricky Burns if Burns wishes to take on a lesser opponent before heading back onto the world scene.

Josh Warrington stopped Rendall Munroe in 7

Technically Munroe stopped himself, but since when is Warrington a guy who beats guys into quitting? Make this 2 straight stoppages for Josh “War” Warrington.

Callum Smith stops Francois Bastient in the 3rd round

Callum Smith fought an expert fight. He kept the smaller man on the outside with his jab and banged his body consistently. Smith showed his patience and his ability to put punches together intelligently. A well-timed uppercut as Bastient came forward was the end for him.

From DC Armory, Washington, District of Columbia

Bernard Hopkins became the unified light heavyweight champion (WBA & IBF) beating Beibut Shumenov by split decision

I don’t like to nor do I often toot my own horn, but I gotta do it here. Coming into the fight, I wrote in the preview that Shumenov was tailor made for Hopkins. He’s slow, plodding, and consistently tries to throw the very same combination. A jab followed by a loaded straight right. Hopkins knew that and more. Hopkins, at 49, took Shumenov to school and he also scored his first knockdown since he dropped Joe Calzaghe in their fight back in 2008. Hopkins consistently beat Shumenov to the punch, used a varied attack, and continually frustrated Shumenov with his defense. The decision was a split one, which was about as bad as giving Bradley the nod in his first fight with Pacquiao. This one wasn’t close, I had it wider than both Moretti and Roth. Ultimately, Hopkins no longer adds to his fabled career story, but rather to the legend and myth of it. He’s crossing lines that only the special athletes do. Hopkins now seems to be on a collision course with Adonis Stevenson to take the lineal light heavyweight crown. After his performance Saturday, I don’t know how that fight isn’t at least even. As for Shumenov, he needs a trainer, badly. I sense that Shumenov is one of those guys who’s completely independent and doesn’t like to be told what to do. He strikes me as stubborn (why did he continue the same strategy for 12 rounds when it clearly didn’t work?) and that could be the downfall to a clearly talented guy. A good offense coach could turn him into a real terror in a division that doesn’t need any more monsters.

Shawn Porter retained the IBF welterweight title stopping Paulie Malignaggi in 4 rounds

To anybody that has watched Malignaggi’s career, this is tough to write (and certainly to talk about.) Malignaggi burst onto the boxing scene as a fast-talking, trash-talking, brash, speedy boxer who could box the skin off your face, but couldn’t hurt you. He was one of the toughest dudes at any weight division taking Miguel Cotto 12 rounds when it seemed that Cotto might be the next special thing in boxing. After some choice rants about bogus scoring in Houston, Al Haymon and his control over the sport, and everything he said that made Adrien Broner look foolish, Paulie has crawled back into the favor of most fans.
On Saturday night, Shawn Porter fought with an intensity and ferocity we don’t often see. He quickly established that he could out-jab Malignaggi and from there it was all downhill for Paulie. Porter was able to surprise Malignaggi with a lunging left hook that Roy Jones used to use all the time. A lot of people picked the Magic Man to outbox Porter, but Porter showed once again that if your plan is to outbox him, he is going to break through that and hurt you. Porter’s future looks bright and I believe Golden Boy is not going to give him an easy route to the Mayweather sweepstakes. I can’t imagine he doesn’t end up going through Keith Thurman at some point. I think in the end, Golden Boy is going to look at put whoever they want to have a belt against Porter (and it will be a disaster.)

Peter Quillin retains his WBO middleweight title by UD over Lukas Konecny

Konecny may have been a solid light middleweight, but he had no business being at middle—actually, he didn’t do too bad. I expected Quillin to stop him and show that he’s the baddest man at middleweight (…on the Showtime network) but alas, Konecny either has a granite chin (could be true) or Quilin is a little over hyped… or it was a bad night for Quillin… I don’t know. I dare someone to watch this fight again.

From Bahia Shrine Temple, Orlando, Florida

Gamalier Rodriguez defeats Orlando Cruz by UD

This might be the end of the line for Puerto Rican Cruz. He’s now 32 and with his loss Saturday adds a 4th loss to the ledger. Cruz lacks the power to continue to dangerous in a division where speed is key.

Felix Verdejo knocked out Ivan Zavala in one round

Unless Verdejo is hiding some serious glass behind those gloves, he is on track to be the next big thing in the sport. And with all these easy fights Top Rank is giving him, he’s going to have the greatest highlight reel since Mike Tyson. This time it was a straight right hand that knocked Zavala into the twilight zone. Here is the minute and a quarter beatdown in beautiful HD.

Matt Korobov scored a 6th round stoppage over Emil Gonzalez

31 year old Russian prospect wins again.

[FIGHT PREVIEWS] Ward/Rodriguez, Adamek/Glazkov, Felix Jr/Benavides, DeGale/Davis + more!

Hi everyone, Fight Previews will be a little different now. Occasionally there will long previews, but mostly it will just be a line or two about why you should watch.

Saturday November 16

From El Domo, San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Jorge Arce 51(46)-7-2 vs Giovanni Caro 24(18)-14-4
Unknown amount of rounds in the super bantamweight division
Arce has always been known as an action fighter, and at 34 has gotta be fighting for the love of it. I can’t imagine any other reason.

From Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico

Daniel Ponce De Leon 44(35)-5 vs Joksan Hernandez 23(15)-5-1
10 rounds in the featherweight division
Ponce De Leon was last seen on the canvas at the hands of Abner Mares who then went on to get knocked out in the 1st round to Jhonny Gonzalez who Ponce De Leon dropped and beat in a technical decision before he lost to Mares… What?

From Claudelands Arena, Hamilton, New Zealand

TV: Main Event PPV (AUS)

David Tua 52(43)-4-2 vs Alexander Ustinov 28(21)-1
12 rounds in the heavyweight division
Robert Berridge 21(17)-1-1 vs Daniel MacKinnon 21(9)-7-1
12 rounds in the light heavyweight division

From Glow, Bluewater, Greenhithe, Kent, UK

TV: Channel 5 UK

James DeGale 16(11)-1 vs Dyah Davis 22(10)-3-1
10 rounds in the super middleweight division
After losing to fellow prospect George Groves, DeGale has been in rebuild mode since with his latest step being Dyah Davis.

From AVI Resort & Casino, Laughlin, Nevada, USA

TV: UniMas (USA)

Jose Felix Jr 25(20)-0-1 vs Santos Benavides 21(17)-4-2
10 rounds in the super featherweight division
Felix Jr can make the next step toward entering the world stage of the stacked super featherweight division. This should be a good war.
Chris Avalos 22(16)-2 vs Rolly Lunas 34(20)-8-1
10 rounds in the super bantamweight division
Avalos had a good fight earlier this year on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. Avalos could position himself for a fight with Rigondeaux next year with an impressive win.
Jose Benavidez 17(13)-0 vs Abraham Alvarez Osuna 16(7)-4-1
6 rounds in the welterweight division
Benavides, once a hot prospect, is looking to get himself back on track in a 6 rounder against a decent opponent.

From Citizens Business Bank Arena, Ontario, California, USA

TV: HBO (USA) Sport 1 (Hungary) Boxnation (UK)

Andre Ward 26(14)-0 vs Edwin Rodriguez 24(16)-0
12 rounds for the lineal super middleweight title
In-depth preview and viewing guide can be found here
Brandon Gonzalez 17(10)-0-1 vs Johnathan Nelson 18(8)-0
10 rounds in the super middleweight division
Brandon Gonzalez, stablemate of Andre Ward, is looking to impress yet again on HBO. After fighting Thomas Oosthuizen to a draw, Gonzalez is back and looking to take out another undefeated fighter. Gonzalez is very talented with stamina being his only issue. The only question this time is whether or not Virgil Hunter will whisper.
John Molina 26(21)-3 vs TBD
10 rounds in the lightweight division
Molina is fresh off a dramatic, round of the year, upset of the year, etc. type win over TMT connected Mickey Bey. In the other corner will be perennial punching bag TBD. Does Molina have another ace up his sleeve or will TBD make him all but invisible Saturday night?

From Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York, USA

TV: NBC (USA)

Tomasz Adamek 49(29)-2 vs Vyacheslav Glazkov 15(11)-0-1
12 rounds in the heavyweight division
Adamek may have been stopped by Vitali Klitschko back in 2011, but apart from that and a loss to Chad Dawson back in 2007, Adamek has beaten everyone put in front of him. That includes Johnathon Banks, Steve Cunningham, Chris Arreola, and Eddie Chambers. Adamek now faces Vyacheslav Glazkov who’s only blemish is a split draw with Malik Scott. This should be a terrific fight that could earn Adamek a shot at the heavyweight title in 2014.
Michael Brooks 10(2)-0-1 vs Karl Dargan 13(7)-0
8 rounds in the lightweight division
Isaac Chilemba 20(9)-2-2 vs Michael Gbenga 16(16)-9
8 rounds in the light heavyweight division

[WEEKEND RECAP] Burns vs Crawford, Salido vs Lomachenko, Chavez Jr vs Vera, Budler vs Diaz, Saengthep vs Kogawa + more

Thursday February 27

From The Conference & Event Center, Niagra Falls, New York

Greg Brady stopped Joel Shojgreen in 2 rounds

This isn’t the Brady you’re thinking of.

Friday February 28

From Horseshoe Casino, Hammond, Indiana

Raymond Gatica stopped Sena Agbeko in the 4th round to advance to the quarterfinals in the Boxcino middleweight tournament

For a guy with 15 pro fights, Agbeko has in terrible condition for this fight. He looked gassed early on and it wasn’t tough for Gatica to find the mark and tag him often. The end came in the 4th round. Gatica had Agbeko in the corner and unloaded everything in the kitchen sink. Agbeko hardly had the strength to keep his hands up and the referee stepped in to stop the action.

Willie Monroe Jr won a 6 round unanimous decision over Donatas Bondorovas

Vitaliy Kopylenko stopped Cerresso Fort in the 2nd round

The 2nd round began with both fighters coming to the center, Kopylenko shot a heavy jab to the chin on Fort and down went Fort. Fort got up and tried to engage but was countered with power shots with every opening he created and the referee called off the bout when Fort rose to his feet was clearly on spaghetti legs (not al dente, either.)

Brandon Adams stopped Daniel Edouard in the 4th round

It looked to me like Edouard would be able to outbox Adams with his long reach. A short counter left hook from Adams was the beginning of the end in the 4th. Adams dropped Edouard with the left and continued to find it and mix his punches up to stop Edouard.
From Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York

J’Leon Love stopped Vladine Biosse in the 10th and final round

Derek Edwards stopped Badou Jack by technical knockout in the 1st round

It appeared that Derek Edwards saw on gaping hole in Badou Jack’s game and decided that that was the one and only play he had. If he had hoped to win, he’d have to use that hail mary every chance he got. A lazy Badou Jack and Edwards would counter with a thunderous overhand right directly on the chin. You can tell from the opening bell that he was looking for it. It connected flush with the force that just about every super middleweight out there would have buckled from. Yet another Mayweather Promotions fight gets upset.

Christopher Pearson won a split decision over Lanardo Tyner

Imagine you’re Floyd Mayweather sitting in the crowd watching the guys you promote and you might have the upcoming interview with Showtime to promote your next fight. One guy gets sick and another gets bumped up on the card. He’s an experienced young fighter with solid amateur experience and heavy hands. My take on Pearson is that he throws more of a “stay back” jab that doesn’t have a ton of power behind it and when he faces guys like Tyner who’s gameplan is to take away the outside game and keep the fight inside, he will struggle. Guys who come forward and want to fight ear to ear need to have their heads jabbed off to convince them that coming inside is too dangerous.

Saturday March 1

From GETEC Arena, Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany

Arthur Abraham won the WBO super middleweight title defeating Robert Stieglitz by split decision

Abraham rallied and did enough work to upset the reigning WBO super middleweight champion. It may as well be the European championship though because the real title belongs to Andre Ward. Anyway, Abraham looks reborn at age 34 if you catch my drift.
From World Trade Center, Naucalpan, Mexico

Fernando Angulo stopped Pablo Cesar Cano in the 9th round due to a cut

Pablo Cesar Cano is one of the toughest guys out there and I love to watch this kid fight. He’s got a heart as big as the HBO truck, but his skin is rice paper thin. Despite his tremendous heart and talent, it may not be wise for Cano to continue boxing. Check out these pictures. This is consistently happening to the kid. Look at the referee’s face when he looks at Cano and stops it.
From Scottish Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, UK

Terence Crawford won the WBO lightweight title from Ricky Burns by UD

Crawford went into hostile territory and boxed a beautiful 12 rounds to decisively win the lightweight title. Unless Burns is completely done, and I don’t think he is, Crawford put on a master performance which elevated the American to the top spot in the lightweight division. Burns definitely had a ton of excuses already pre-built into the fight, but after the fight he was all praises for Crawford.

John Murray stopped John Simpson by TKO2

Simpson hit the deck 3 times in the 2nd round before the referee waved off the contest. Simpson was coming off a tough KO against Derry Mathews.

Anthony Ogogo won on points against Greg O’Neill.

Anthony Joshua knocked Hector Alfredo Avila out in 1 round.

A quick win for the big guy.
From City Academy Sports Centre, Bristol, Avon, UK

James DeGale stopped Gevorg Khatchikian in the 11th round

A good win for DeGale who continues to build himself into super middleweight contention.
From Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa

Hekkie Budler won the WBA world minimumweight title against Karluis Diaz by KO1

An easy win for Budler and a unification fight with number one rated Katsunari Takayama seems imminent.
From Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr won a unanimous decision over Brian Vera

Chavez Jr looked like the guy who almost upset the middleweight champion of the world. In fact, he looked a little better. He definitely has the same old Chavez Jr weight advantage that we’ve seen in the past, but his timing improved. He was able to tag Vera with the same punches over and over and decisively win the fight this time. The saving grace for Vera is that he appeared to hurt his hand very early in the fight and it was obvious. He stopped sitting on his punches around the 4th round and that’s about the time Chavez Jr really began to assert himself in the fight. Aside from the final round, which was a joke, Chavez Jr looked impressive and ready to start fighting other contenders in… I guess the super middleweight division if that’s where he’s going to stay.

Orlando Salido won via split decision over Vasyl Lomachenko

I can’t remember a prospect that turned pro with more hype than Lomachenko. I can’t remember a debut that was as electrifiying as Lomachenko’s was. I was excited. I thought history could be made if he was matched up correctly, given he hasn’t had much experience against the more rugged pro styles. Then the Bradley-Marquez card comes along. Salido battered Orlando Cruz and there were rumblings that Lomachenko would go after Salido in his second career fight. I groaned. What a mistake! I thought, we’ve all fallen in love with the idea and the potential upside of this Ukrainian winning machine. We’ve become blind to reality. On Saturday, reality hit hard. Reality does not play by any rules other than the ones it sets. Reality came in the form of low blows, hits during the clinch with the free arm, and a weight it felt comfortable at rather than the weight that was agreed upon.
Lomachenko learned a valuable lesson. One could make the argument that he learned mid fight and didn’t adjust in time. The very thing that made people hesitant to crown Lomachenko as the heir to the featherweight throne, inexperience, would be that which would lead to his defeat. Lomachenko can find solace in the fact that he was the better man that night, and perhaps if he was the man a year from now after a couple of learning fights, he would have possibly stopped Salido with all his advantages.
The reality of the night was that Salido took away what made Lomachenko great. He instilled fear in Lomachenko. Fear of the headbutt. Lomachenko became hesitant to throw body shots and work on the inside. He had nothing to do other than clinch. Salido didn’t win the outside game, but his inside work was what won him the fight. I felt Lomachenko did enough to have an argument for the fight, and his tremendous heart at the end of the fight where he turned up intensity and let it all hang out certainly closed the gap. To quote Mark Twain in a half-assed way that I’m sure he would approve of, the report of Lomachenko’s loss have been greatly exaggerated. He showed everything I needed to see to be optimistic about his future. (For the record, I was never sold on Lomachenko and I thought Salido was beat him.)

Juan Diaz won a UD over Gerardo Robles

Diaz didn’t look in shape, and frankly his performance was underwhelming. Still, he did enough to beat an overmatched opponent.

Oscar Valdez stopped Samuel Sanchez in the 3rd round

Valdez came out and did what he does best. He took his time and broke Sanchez down. Sanchez was game, but his defense made Valdez look like a surgeon. Valdez began to land heavy shots that were wobbling Sanchez every time they landed. The stoppage was a bit controversial as the referee stepped in after a left wobbled Sanchez and called it off.

Jose Zepeda scored a 2nd round stoppage over Johnnie Edwards

Zepeda is a little irresponsible on defense. I feel a quick fighter can catch him, but he’s thus far compensated with terrific footwork and a good amount of power. Zepeda scored the easy stoppage over Edwards.

Alex Saucedo won a UD over Gilbert Venegas

Venegas was brought in to test Saucedo. He certainly did. Saucedo looked like a guy who was in a fight. He paid for his recklessness and while he won easy on the cards, it wasn’t an easy fight. Saucedo is still very green and needs more seasoning.

Tuesday March 4

From Suranaree Army Camp Stadium, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand

Yodmongkol Vor Saengthep won a majority decision and the interim WBA world flyweight title over Takuya Kogawa

If you haven't yet, check out the Canelo-Angulo viewing guide and the weekend previews will be out tomorrow.
